PRES. TRUMP IN A JOINT SESSION WITH CONGRESS, DEFENDED HIS NEW TARIFFS ON U. S. TRADING PARTNERS. (PHOTO).

Image
U.S. President Donald Trump in a Tuesday night speech to a joint session of Congress defended his new tariffs on U.S. trading partners and pledged that more are coming.  “Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades, and now it’s our turn,” Trump said in what was his first address to U.S. lawmakers of his second term.  The remarks came after the United States imposed 25% tariffs earlier Tuesday on exports from its two biggest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, and doubled an earlier 10% tariff on Chinese imports to 20%. China is the No. 3 U.S. trading partner.  U.S. stock markets have taken a significant tumble, and the three countries have threatened retaliation, prompting concerns of a broader trade war.  Trump also said the United States will begin imposing “reciprocal tariffs” on all U.S. trading partners on April 2.  “Whatever they tariff us, we will tariff them,” he said. “Whatever they tax us, we will tax them.”  “I wanted to make...

If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides."  His description of the letter matched what Zelenskyy posted earlier in the day on social media, saying Ukraine was ready to negotiate “as soon as possible” and would “work under” Trump’s “strong leadership” to reach a peace deal.  Zelenskyy said his acrimonious encounter with Trump at the White House last Friday was “regrettable” and that he remains ready to sign a deal that would give the United States substantial, long-term rights to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals needed for the American manufact...

At a probe session on Wednesday, Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, ruled the petition invalid, citing a violation of Order 40 of the Senate Standing Orders. He explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan signed the petition herself instead of having it endorsed by another person, rendering it procedurally flawed. Additionally, the matters raised were already before the courts, making them sub judice. Despite being scheduled to appear before the committee, Akpoti-Uduaghan was absent. The session, set for 2:00 PM, eventually commenced at 2:58 PM after waiting for both Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South).  Chaos Erupts in Senate Over ‘Rules and Order’ in Natasha’s Petition The Nigerian Senate was thrown into disarray on Wednesday as confusion arose over the handling of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Akpoti-Uduaghan invoked Order 10 of the Senate Rules, seeking to have her petition admitted and referred to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. Her submission followed Akpabio’s earlier remarks in which he denied ever harassing any woman. However, Senator Mohammed Monguno, citing Order 40, argued that the Senate lacked jurisdiction over the matter, as it was already before a court. He insisted that debating the issue in the chamber would be subjudice and an overreach of judicial authority. “Mr. Senate President, distinguished colleagues, you are aware that the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Unoma Ekaete Akpabio, and her family have taken Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to court following her alleg...

He cited the 1999 Constitution, the Police Act 2020, and Nigeria Police Regulations, which prohibit police officers from initiating legal actions over personal grievances. The case, filed at a Federal High Court in Abuja, accuses Sowore of violating Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act by calling Egbetokun an "illegal IGP" on social media. The three nations, led by military juntas following coups between 2020 and 2023, left ECOWAS on January 29, forming a new alliance known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). During a visit to Abidjan, Mahama offered to mediate between ECOWAS and AES, emphasizing the need for regional unity and a transition to constitutional democracy. Ouattara expressed hope that Mahama’s appeal would be heeded, stressing that West Africa’s future depends on reintegration.
