 EAC and SADC mull deployment of joint force to DRC Eastern and Southern African countries are looking into the possibility of deploying troops to secure areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo now under M23 rebel control, according to a document seen by Reuters on Tuesday. The EAC and SADC regional blocs have previously called for a ceasefire in the war in the mineral-rich region, which DR Congo's prime minister said this week had killed around 7,000 people since January. The document seen by Reuters detailed recommendations to defence chiefs after a meeting of technical experts in Tanzania on February 23. The defence chiefs are expected to prepare a report that will be discussed this coming weekend. The shocking incident, captured on video, shows two individuals using an axe to repeatedly strike the helpless animalā€™s head while it was trapped in a wire fence. The footage has sparked outrage among animal rights organizations and the public.  Nigeria's GDP increases by 3.84% in Q4 2024 - NBS The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report for the fourth quarter of 2024, showing a 3.84% year-on-year growth in real terms. This growth rate surpasses the 3.46% recorded in the same quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2024, with the service sector having a major influence growth of 5.37% and contributed 57.38% to the aggregate GDP. This was disclosed via a post on the NBS X handle on Tuesday, February 25. The post reads: "Nigeriaā€™s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.84% (year-on-year) in real terms in the fourth quarter of 2024. This growth rate is higher than the 3.46% recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2024 growth rate (approximately 3.46%). "The performance of the GDP in the fourth quarter of 2024 was driven mainly by the Services sector, which recorded a growth of 5.37% and contributed 57.38% to the aggregate GDP."

 Deaf Man Sues Ex-Lover Over N100,000 Savings and Broken Marriage Promise A hearing-impaired man, Kuma Haruna, has taken his former lover, Malma Bilkisu, to a Shariā€™a court in Kaduna State, seeking the return of his N100,000 savings, which he claims she refuses to repay. Harunaā€™s brother, Abubakar, testified in court that Haruna had been entrusting his money to Bilkisu for safekeeping. However, when he requested the funds, she claimed to have only N80,000, significantly less than the N175,000 he estimated. The dispute was initially brought before a Shariā€™a court in Rigasa, where Bilkisu presented N80,000, but Haruna refused to accept it. The judge proposed that both parties swear on the Quran, but they never returned to finalize the case.  UK to pause bilateral aid to Rwanda over Congo conflict Britain on Tuesday said it would pause some bilateral aid to Rwanda and impose other diplomatic sanctions on Kigali over its role in the conflict in neighbouring Congo, Reuters reported. Rwanda is facing global pressure over allegations it supports the M23 group which, since January, has captured swathes of eastern Congo including the cities of Goma and Bukavu, and valuable mineral deposits. Kigali denies backing the group but says its own troops are acting in self defence against hostile groups based in Congo. MOHBAD'S DEATH: COURT EXONERATES NAIRA MARLEY, SAM LARRY, PRIMEBOY. (PHOTO).

 A Magistrate Court has acquitted Nigerian singer Abdulazeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, of any wrongdoing in the death of fellow artist Aloba Oladimeji lleriOluwa, also known as Mohbad. The court's decision was based on the legal advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lagos, which stated that Naira Marley had no case to answer. Magistrate Ejiro Kubenje also freed music promoter Samson Balogun Eletu (Sam Larry), Owodunni Ibrahim (Primeboy), and Mohbad's former manager, Opere Babatunde, of any involvement in Mohbad's death. However, the DPP announced that it will prosecute Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who treated Mohbad, and Ayobami Sadiq, a friend of Mohbad's, for reckless and negligent acts under Section 251 (e) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The prosecution will take place at the Magistrate Court.

  Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has countered former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's assertion that former military President Ibrahim Babangida tormented Tinubu during the military era. Onanuga insisted that Babangida was, in fact, a significant influence on Tinubu's political journey. Osinbajo made the remark while reviewing Babangida's autobiography, A Journey in Service, at its public presentation in Abuja last week. He recalled Tinubu's resistance to the military's dissolution of the Senate following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
