In a dramatic turn of events, the Department of State Security Services (DSS) has reportedly arrested the suspended State Corps Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin, for questioning over the lynching of travellers on March 27 in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of the state.
Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpehbolo has reached out to the victimsā families, the Hausa community leaders in the state, and the northern governors about the incident.
Besides, Governor Okpebholo has also reached out to the Government of Kano State, where most of the deceased are reported to hail from and was also in Katsina state to see the governor.
This follows the suspension of CP Ibadin by the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who had earlier vowed to bring all perpetrators of the crime to justice.
It was alleged that Ibadin, who hails from Uromi, had prior knowledge of the activities of certain illegal vigilante groups operating in the area but failed to take necessary action to curb their excesses. His alleged inaction has fueled suspicions that he may have, at best, turned a blind eye to their activities or, at worst, enabled their operations.
Recall that Governor Okpebholo, in a firm stance against lawlessness, has directed security agencies to ensure that all those involved in the heinous crime are tracked down and prosecuted. He reiterated his administrationās commitment to upholding law and order, emphasizing that āno one is above the law.ā
According to a highly placed source who spoke on condition of anonymity, CP Ibadin was taken into custody by the DSS as part of the ongoing investigation into the killings. The source further revealed that the government is prepared to take all necessary steps to ensure that justice is served and that no one responsible for the killings escapes the long arm of the law.
The arrest has been described as a significant escalation in the governmentās efforts to restore security and hold complicit officials accountable, sending a strong message that impunity will not be tolerated under Governor Okpebholoās administration.
