Outrage as EFCC cracks down on vote-buyers in Edo governorship election
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested several individuals suspected of vote-buying during the ongoing Edo Governorship election.
The arrests have sparked outrage among some residents, who are protesting what they describe as unjust victimization.
According to reports, the EFCC officers acted swiftly to apprehend the suspects following allegations of electoral malpractice.
However, the arrest has been met with resistance, with locals arguing that the individuals in question were unfairly targeted.
Some residents insisted that the arrests were an attempt to suppress their voting rights and claimed they were being singled out without clear justification.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrests, while tensions continue to simmer among the affected communities.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations into the alleged vote-buying continue.
The Edo Governorship election, which has seen significant voter turnout, is being closely monitored by both local and international observers.
The EFCC had announced on Friday that its officials had been deployed to all local government areas in Edo State to address voter inducement during the governorship elections.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity nationwide by preventing financial inducements that could influence voters.
“Our operatives have been deployed to monitor the conduct of the elections. We are committed to ensuring electoral integrity by allowing voters to cast their ballots freely, without any form of financial inducement. Vote-buying is a financial crime, and the EFCC will not tolerate it anywhere,” he stated.
The EFCC has consistently participated in monitoring electoral processes across the country, as part of its mandate to tackle economic and financial crimes.
