As Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade prepares to ascend the throne as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, he faces the enormous task of filling the shoes of his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, whose reign was marked by influence, tradition, and controversy.
Priorities and Vision
Oba Owoade has outlined his key focus areas, including tackling youth unemployment by promoting job opportunities and vocational training. He also aims to sustain cultural heritage by enhancing the Sango and Oranmiyan festivals and securing the return of artefacts taken by the British in 1895.
Additionally, he has engaged international partners to support healthcare development in Oyo, while pledging to empower widows and widowers for socio-economic advancement.
Reconciliation and Security Concerns
The new Alaafin is expected to address long-standing tensions with Isale Oyo following the 1992 assassination of High Chief Amuda Olorunosebi, the late Ashipa of Oyo. Calls for reconciliation, particularly through recognizing Chief Ganiyu Ajiboye in the vacant Ashipa position, remain a pressing issue.
Security is also a growing concern, as Fulani herders' incursions into Oyo have escalated under lax enforcement. Unlike his predecessor, who maintained strict territorial control, Oba Owoade will need urgent measures to curb these threats.
Healing Divisions Within Oyo Mesi
The Alaafin’s selection process was marred by legal battles and internal rifts among the Oyo Mesi (Kingmakers). With some factions opposing his enthronement, reconciliation within the council remains critical to ensuring stability in the kingdom.
Coronation and Call for Unity
Having completed traditional rites, Oba Owoade will don the sacred Sango crown in a ceremony on April 5, 2025. His wife, Ayaba Abiwumi Owoade, has emphasized the need for peace and unity, urging the people of Oyo to embrace collective development.
As the new Alaafin takes the throne, all eyes will be on him to foster peace, resolve disputes, and uphold the legacy of Oyo’s monarchy.
