  The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Rivers State Police Command, demanding a public apology for the assault on five journalists during a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt. Failure to comply, the union warned, would result in a statewide media blackout. In a statement jointly signed by Council Chairman Comrade Paul Bazia and Secretary Dr. Ijeoma Tubosia, the NUJ condemned the police actions as “unprovoked, barbaric, and inhuman,” calling for the immediate identification and prosecution of the officers involved. “The NUJ, as a watchdog of society, will not sit idly by while media practitioners are subjected to barbarism and brutality.  Customs Foils Attempt to Smuggle Endangered Species into Nigeria at Calabar Border Officers and Men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Cross River/Calabar Free Trade Zone/Akwa Ibom Area Command, have intercepted a large consignment of illegal wildlife products at Calabar's Mfum/Ekok Joint Border Station.  Speaking at a press briefing in Calabar on Monday, 24 March 2025, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Chukwudi Ogbonna, disclosed that the items were intercepted from a traveller entering Nigeria from Cameroon during a routine baggage inspection at the border station on Wednesday, 12 March 2025.  "The individual was found in possession of 213 parrot heads, 29 packs of parrot feathers,128 African hornbill heads, 5 eagle heads, 1 pack of eagle feathers, 2 chimpanzee heads, 4 hands, and 4 legs.  Seven dead as truck crashes into vehicles on Lagos-Ibadan expressway The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has said seven persons lost their lives while four others were injured when a truck lost control and crashed into two other vehicles along the Lagos/ Ibadan expressway on Saturday morning Ogun State Sector’s Route Commander and Chief Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Florence Okupe, confirmed the ghastly accident in a statement in Abeokuta, the state capital. According to the statement, a total of 15 people comprising 13 male adults and two females were involved in the accident. The statement indicated that those injured were three male adults and one female adult while the six male adults and one female adults lost their lives. The man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia from Maryland, was mistakenly deported to an El Salvador prison by Trump’s government. US District Judge Paula Xinis issued the order on Friday, stating that Garcia had been illegally deported to El Salvador. The court directed that he must be returned by Monday before midnight.  Driver, Conductor abandon passengers as BRT bus catches fire in Lagos The driver and conductor of a BRT bus have fled for their lives, abandoning passengers to their fate as a BRT bus caught fire at Maryland, Lagos State, on Saturday morning. Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the incident, said the bus was coming from Ikorodu, heading to CMS, when the sad incident occurred. As of the time of filing this report, officers of the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), fire service and the neighbourhood security outfit were already on ground to contain the fire.  A driver lost his life, while another sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between two articulated trucks on the R40 road in Shatale near Bushbuckridge early this morning (Friday, April 4). According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Safety, Security, and Liaison, the accident occurred just after 04:00 when the two trucks, traveling in opposite directions, collided. He further stated that bad weather and reckless driving cannot be ruled out as possible causes of the crash.
