UN Condemns Surge in Child Rape Amid DR Congo Conflict The United Nations has strongly condemned the alarming rise in sexual violence against children in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where nearly 10,000 cases of rape and abuse were reported in the first two months of 2025 alone. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said on Friday that between 35% and 45% of the victims were children, with initial data suggesting that a child was raped every 30 minutes during the conflict's peak this year. Speaking from Goma, Elder described the crisis as systemic, calling it a deliberate "weapon of war" used to terrorize communities. “We’re seeing survivors as young as toddlers,” he said, urging urgent global action. Elder emphasized the need for more prevention, survivor-focused support, and secure reporting systems, stressing that the figures may represent just a fraction of the actual abuse due to stigma and fear.

I can never join APC – Peter Obi

The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, said he would never join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi said this in a statement issued on Friday.

Referencing a social media report linking him to an APC gathering, Obi maintained that he does not engage in toxic politics, blackmail, or any form of political manipulation.

The former Anambra governor warned against associating his name with such narratives.

“For the avoidance of doubt, both now and in the future, I am not a member of the APC, nor am I an intending member.

“My stance on politics has always been rooted in integrity, fairness, and issue-based engagement.

“I firmly believe that all political parties should assess aspirants solely on their competence, capacity, and compassion — qualities essential for building a better Anambra and a better Nigeria,” he said.

Obi also tasked the public to evaluate his former ally and now APC gubernatorial aspirant in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo based on highlighted leadership qualities devoid of personal attacks.

In February, days after dumping LP for APC, Ozigbo said he looked forward to Obi joining him in the ruling party.

Obi said, “As for Valentine Ozigbo, I maintain that he, like every other aspirant, should be evaluated based on these key leadership qualities in his new political party.

“Elections and primaries should not be reduced to toxic narratives or personal attacks.

“Political choices should be guided by credibility, vision, and the ability to deliver real change — not by dragging individuals into toxic discussions, blackmail, or needless controversy.

“Furthermore, primaries — whether conducted through voting, interviews, selection processes, or any other democratic method — must be free, fair, and credible.

“Every aspirant who is a legitimate member of a party deserves a fair chance to contest without bias or blackmail.”
