HARDSHIP: REP UGBOR FAULTS BENUE UNIVERSITY'S PROPOSED TUITION FEE HIKE

7th April, 2025

House of Representatives member for Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency, Terseer Ugbor, has called for a thorough overhaul of the Benue State’s higher education system, citing concerns over the proposed tuition fee hike at Benue State University, BSU, and observed that the proposed increment is capable of igniting students’ protest.

Ugbor, former chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on Student Loans and Access to Higher Education, who was reacting to the proposed tuition fees at the Benue State University, in a statement by his media aide, Fred Dagu, at the weekend in Makurdi, emphasized the need for reforms to alleviate the financial burden on disadvantaged students.

The federal lawmaker urged the state government to establish a loan program for students pursuing higher education to complement the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative especially this time that economic hardship and insecurity are affecting many families; advising authorities of the state university to shave the idea of school fees increment.

Ugbor equally expressed deep concern over the lack of educational policies promoting higher education in Benue, including the absence of rewards for exceptional students and sponsorship for advanced degrees, advocating for the revival of the comatose Benue State Scholarship Board.

Ugbor who noted hat advancing education is crucial to societal progress, urged the state government to prioritize policies making education more affordable and appealing to all students.
