Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party's (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has expressed his willingness to step down his presidential ambition in the 2027 elections if a better candidate emerges.
Adebayo made this statement on Sunday, saying, "Everybody knows that I have an aspiration. I'm working on it, but God is the author of tomorrow; we don't even know who is going to be around in 2027." He emphasized that his personal ambition should not hinder a more capable candidate from emerging to address Nigeria's challenges.
The SDP aims to present a candidate who can unite Nigerians and provide a viable alternative to President Bola Tinubu's administration in the 2027 presidential election. Adebayo assured that the SDP will not exploit religious or ethnic differences to divide Nigerians.
This development comes as talks of an inter-party alliance gain momentum ahead of the 2027 polls. Opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, have announced a coalition to challenge President Tinubu's administration, which has faced criticism for its handling of the economy.
