Edo State Governor Clashes with PDP Over Support for President Tinubu

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly criticized the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for misrepresenting his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor dismissed the PDP’s claims as ā€œweakā€ and unfounded.

The controversy arose after Okpebholo, while hosting 17 acting chairmen from Edo’s 18 local government areas who recently defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. He praised Tinubu’s leadership, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy, a move he said previous administrations avoided despite its potential to drive national development. Okpebholo also urged the chairmen to begin campaigning for Tinubu, including erecting billboards in their local areas, declaring, ā€œThere is no vacancy in 2027 in Abuja.ā€

The PDP in Edo State responded by accusing the governor of violating Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act and attempting to mislead the president and APC leadership into believing he still commands significant political influence in the state. They claimed his actions were a desperate bid to maintain relevance.

In his rebuttal, Governor Okpebholo denied any violation of the Electoral Act, asserting his right as a Nigerian to support the president’s vision. He accused the PDP of distorting his statements to score political points and exposing their ā€œdwindling influenceā€ in Edo State. The governor emphasized that his remarks were made to foster collaboration with the federal government for Edo’s development, adding that he would unapologetically campaign for Tinubu’s re-election if he chose to.

Okpebholo further highlighted his administration’s achievements, noting that in just four months, his team has shifted the narrative in Edo State by focusing on improving lives and restoring public confidence in governance. He called on the PDP to reflect on his widespread support among Edo residents rather than issuing ā€œinaccurateā€ and ā€œbitterā€ statements. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on his mandate and steering Edo toward peace, prosperity, and progress.
