The youngest fatality of Wednesday's spree killer in Rockford, Illinois died protecting her little sister.
Jenna Newcomb, who would have turned 16 on Monday, was the youngest victim of Christian Soto and died as a result of being beaten with a softball bat. However her mother wants her to be remembered as a hero who died protecting her little sister and friend.
Jenna, her sister, and a friend had a spring break sleep over the night before and the 3 were watching a movie in the basement when Soto broke in. Once inside he quickly found Jenna's softball bat and began beating the girls with it and calling them b*****s. The girls crouched in a corner where Jenna took the brunt of the attack trying to protect the other 2 girls.
Soto eventually stopped beating them when he announced he was going to get a gun. At this point the friend was able to run from the home and call 911.
Sadly it was too late for this brave young girl. When police made entry to the home they discovered Jenna deceased. Her sister suffered a broken arm and all of the girls were covered in bruises and lacerations.
Soto admitted to the killings and contends Jacob Schupbach (one of his first victims, and his longtime friend) had given him bad drugs. He killed both Jacob and his mother before killing a mail man. After this he broke into the girls home and beat them with the bat, taking Jenna's life.
Police attested Soto a short time later while he was in the process of stabbing his final victim.
This is such a tragic and sad story for all families involved, but I find it extra heartbreaking that these 3 innocent girls were just watching a movie and enjoying their break when death came to their door.
Our thoughts are with Jenna's family as they try to cope with this senseless act perpetrated against their loved one.
Jenna truly was a hero. She will be remembered as one by all.
