Police Fire Teargas At Protesters In Port Harcourt

Tension erupted in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Monday as officers of the Rivers State Police Command fired teargas at protesters gathered at the Isaac Boro Park. The protesters, members of the 'Take It Back Movement', defied police warnings, insisting on their right to assemble.

The demonstrators, who arrived at the venue as early as 9 am, were met with heavy police presence. "Nobody can tell us where not to gather, we are Rivers people," they shouted, standing firm despite police warnings. The standoff escalated, with officers deploying teargas to disperse the crowd, chasing protesters, and beating up some, including journalists.

The protest aimed to express grievances against the government, including the repeal of the Cybercrime Act and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. "We have no government," one protester said. "This government in Rivers State is alien to our people; it is unconstitutional. We demand our governor's return to office."

Similar protests occurred in Lagos, Oyo, and other states, with demonstrators demanding good governance. The Nigeria Police Force had advised organizers to shelve the protest, citing national issues and the coincidence with National Police Day celebrations. Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi described the protest as "ill-timed" and "mischievous".
