The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has clarified that no Nigerian student on a valid Federal Government scholarship has been abandoned. All beneficiaries duly enrolled under the Bilateral Education Scholarship (BES) Programme prior to 2024 have received payments up to the 2024 budget year, in line with the Federal Government’s obligations. The arrest followed a distress call received from a concerned citizen (name withheld) reporting the illegal display of a masquerade cultural group that was attacking citizens, blocking a public highway, and extorting money from members of the public passing through the route. Residents of Eastern North Carolina are on edge this Halloween with a real-life boogeyman on the loose. The Sheriff of Craven has asked residents to "lay low" this Halloween (tonight) as the wanted man might try to blend in and hurt someone else taking part in Halloween festivities, including trick or treating.  Kenya landslide: At least 13 killed as rescue work continues At least 13 people were killed in western Kenya's Rift Valley in a landslide early on Saturday morning following heavy rains, the police said. Nineteen people have been rescued and an unknown number are still missing, Elgeyo-Marakwet County police commander Peter Mulinge told Reuters. Kenya's interior minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, said in a statement that military and police helicopters had been deployed to assist with the rescue efforts. Hundreds of people have been killed in recent years in landslides and flooding in Kenya, with scientists saying climate change is causing more intense and frequent extreme weather events. In the worst incident last year, 61 people were killed in a mudslide and flash floods in central Kenya. Landslides in the east of neighbouring Uganda have also killed at least 13 people this week, according to the Uganda Red Cross.

 House Probes Excessive Tax Deductions From Civil Servants And Multiple Banks Charges The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into excessive deduction of taxes and sundry charges from the earnings of civil and public servants.  The House Ad-hoc Committee set up for the probe will also investigate multiple bank charges imposed on customers' accounts across the country.  Lawmakers, at an inaugural sitting, say the investigation has become imperative arising from numerous complaints received from civil servants and other citizens about inconsistencies in bank charges and tax deductions.  The House of Representatives is assuring Nigerians that it will ensure that financial practices whether in government or banking institutions align with principles of justice and equity.

 WHO Warns of Surging Mpox Spread Across Africa and Beyond The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a strong warning about the escalating transmission of mpox, with 17 African nations reporting active cases over the past six weeks.  WHO in a statement said from September 14 to October 19, the agency documented 2,862 confirmed infections and 17 deaths. Formerly known as monkeypox, the virus has now emerged for the first time in Malaysia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, marking its expanding footprint outside Africa. In its latest assessment, the WHO calls for intensified monitoring, broader vaccine distribution, and robust infection prevention measures to halt the virus's entrenchment.  As mpox advances quietly yet persistently, international leaders face a critical juncture: effective containment demands a swift, unified response.
