BIRD FLU RETURNS, SPARKING CONCERNS OVER PREPAREDNESS. (PHOTO).

Image
Bird flu returns, sparking concerns over preparedness Avian flu is resurging across the U.S., driven by migratory birds, raising concerns about the country’s ability to respond to outbreaks—especially during the ongoing government shutdown. Experts warn that the virus could disrupt commercial poultry production, driving up food prices, while also evolving and spilling into other species, heightening fears of human-to-human transmission and a potential pandemic. Over the past month, influenza has been detected in 62 commercial and backyard flocks across 17 states, affecting roughly 6.6 million birds. Infections have also appeared in dairy cows, cats, and other mammals in several states. Public health officials say response efforts are hampered by staffing cuts at the USDA and CDC, immigration enforcement on farms, and the government shutdown, which has suspended critical activities such as weekly calls among animal health labs. Experts warn that vaccine distribution to livestock ha...

Denholm described Musk as critical to Tesla’s evolution beyond a conventional automaker, emphasizing his role in the company’s push into Full Self Driving technology and the development of Optimus robots. In a letter to shareholders, Denholm wrote that without Musk, Tesla could lose substantial value as the market may no longer recognize the company’s long-term potential. The plan, which consists of 12 tranches of shares tied to performance milestones, would also boost Musk’s voting power, increasing his stake from about 13% to roughly 25%. Critics, including proxy advisor Institutional Shareholder Services and a coalition of unions and corporate watchdogs, ...

Netanyahu says Israel will determine which foreign forces are 'unacceptable' in Gaza  Several countries have offered to participate in an international stabilization force for Gaza, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, even as key details—including the force’s mandate—are still being worked out. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized Sunday that Israel would decide “which forces are unacceptable to us.” He added that the U.S. fully supports this approach. Rubio, visiting Israel, said the force would need to include countries Israel is “comfortable with,” while any potential involvement of the Palestinian Authority remains uncertain. The remarks come as tensions continue in Gaza. Israel carried out a “targeted strike” Saturday against a member of the Islamic Jihad organization, citing an imminent threat to its forces. President Donald Trump said the U.S.-backed ceasefire remains in place, though both sides have accused each other of violations. Thirteen Israeli h...

LONDON POLICE ARREST ASYLUM SEEKER MISTAKENLY FREED FROM PRISON. (PHOTO).

Image
London police arrest asylum seeker mistakenly freed from prison London police have arrested a convicted sex offender and asylum seeker who was mistakenly released from prison, in an error that has drawn sharp criticism of government procedures. Authorities said Ethiopian national Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu was taken into custody in the Finsbury Park area of north London. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that Kebatu will be deported as soon as possible. Kebatu, who had previously made headlines after being arrested earlier this year for sexually assaulting a teenage girl, had been mistakenly released from a Chelmsford prison on Friday. Officials said he was incorrectly classified as due for routine release instead of being transferred to an immigration detention center. Kebatu had been sentenced in September to 12 months for multiple offenses, including assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Epping shortly after arriving in the U.K. by boat. The error triggered widespread concern, g...

Private donors contribute over $125M to sustain foreign aid programs after US funding cuts When the Trump administration froze U.S. foreign aid, a scramble began to find ways to keep critical programs alive. In February, multiple groups launched emergency fundraising efforts to sustain projects that were abruptly cut off. Over the next eight months, private donors and foundations mobilized more than $125 million—far beyond what organizers initially expected, though still only a fraction of the total aid gap. Teams of former USAID staff and economists worked long hours to identify roughly 80 programs deemed both cost-effective and impactful. Their effort, known as Project Resource Optimization (PRO), ultimately helped secure over $110 million in charitable grants, with additional emergency funds raising another $15 million. Donors ranged from established foundations, like GiveWell, to new philanthropists inspired by the crisis, such as a San Francisco couple who contributed over $1 mill...

Some posts reportedly amassed tens of thousands of views, with the medium and advertising executive considered central to spreading the claims. She did not testify during her trial, and her attorneys argued that she was not sane at the time of the killing, citing longstanding mental health issues. The boy’s mother, Margot Wood, tearfully recounted in court how Ellis stabbed her son, Julian, and also injured her, saying she did not know Ellis prior to the attack. Wood described the horror of hearing her son’s screams and witnessing his terror, calling it a “living nightmare” she relives every day. He has been in federal custody since his arrest in September 2024. His projected release date, May 8, 2028, accounts for time already served and “good time credit” under the First Step Act, which allows federal inmates to serve up to 85% of their sentence. Combs could be released earlier if a presidential pardon were granted, though a White House official has stated that no action is currently planned. President Donald Trump confirmed earlier this month that Combs had requested a pardon, jokingly referring to him as “Puff Daddy” during remarks in the Oval Office. Earlier this year, Combs faced a hi...

JUDGE TO DECIDE ON SUSPECT’S COURTROOM CLOTHING IN CHARLIE KIRK CASE. (PHOTO).

Image
Judge to decide on suspect’s courtroom clothing in Charlie Kirk case A judge is set to decide Monday whether Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, can appear in civilian clothing during upcoming court proceedings. Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, after allegedly shooting Kirk at an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. On Oct. 9, Robinson and his attorneys filed a motion requesting that he be allowed to attend all future hearings without wearing a prison uniform or restraints. His legal team argues that wearing civilian clothes is crucial to preserving the presumption of innocence and preventing any potential bias in front of a jury. Prosecutors have opposed the motion, and arguments on the matter were presented on Friday. The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. local time on Monday and will be available to stream.

THREADS INTRODUCES ‘GHOST POSTS’ THAT VANISH AFTER 24 HOURS. (PHOTO).

Image
Threads introduces ‘ghost posts’ that vanish after 24 hours Threads, Meta’s competitor to X, is rolling out a new “disappearing posts” feature called “ghost posts,” allowing its 400 million monthly users to share content that automatically vanishes after 24 hours. The feature launched Monday for users worldwide and is aimed at encouraging more casual, low-pressure sharing. To create a ghost post, users toggle the “ghost” icon on the app’s compose screen. Posts appear in others’ timelines with a dotted conversation bubble for distinction. Replies from other users are sent directly to the poster’s DMs rather than appearing in the timeline. Only the poster can see the full count of likes and replies, which are represented by smiley-face icons to others. After 24 hours, posts disappear from the feed but remain accessible to the poster in the app’s archived section. The company notes that message request settings determine whether replies from non-followers go to the poster’s inbox or ...

TRUMP SAYS PUTIN SHOULD END UKRAINE WAR INSTEAD OF TESTING MISSILES. (PHOTO).

Trump says Putin should end Ukraine war instead of testing missiles U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin should focus on ending the war in Ukraine rather than testing a nuclear-powered missile, noting that the United States has a nuclear submarine stationed off Russia’s coast. The remarks came after Putin announced Sunday that Russia had successfully tested its nuclear-capable Burevestnik cruise missile, which Moscow claims can evade any defense system. The missile, known to NATO as the SSC-X-9 Skyfall, reportedly flew 14,000 km (8,700 miles). Speaking from Air Force One, Trump emphasized that such a long-range test was unnecessary given the U.S. nuclear submarine presence near Russia. “They know we have a nuclear submarine, the greatest in the world, right off their shores,” he said. “You ought to get the war ended, the war that should have taken one week is now in its fourth year. That’s what you ought to do instead of testing missiles.” The K...

NIGERIA TURNS TOWARDS PROSPERITY- BY WALE EDUN. (PHOTO). #PRESS RELEASE

Nigeria turns towards prosperity By Wale Edun In this role, I often feel a mix of emotions: deep pride in our national journey, regret over the opportunities we failed to seize, and confidence in our direction of travel today. Despite some historical shortfalls and present-day challenges, I believe the most difficult phase of our economic journey is behind us. Nigeria has turned a decisive corner. The road ahead will demand hard work and discipline, but we are firmly on the right path. When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office in 2023, Nigeria’s economy was on the brink of fiscal collapse. Slowing growth, surging inflation, and market distortions like the fuel subsidy and multiple exchange rate regimes had created an environment that scared off investment. The President’s mandate was clear – dismantle those market distortions, reward productivity, and create a climate where private investment can thrive. From Crisis to Stability Two years later, the results are evident at the m...
