  The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has prohibited the unauthorized use of its campus, including hostels and other facilities, for video production by skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators. In a statement released on Thursday, October 28 and signed by its Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals filming skits, movies, and other contents on campus without approval. The move aims to protect the academic environment and preserve the institution’s image from misrepresentation in unregulated productions. “The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement said.   The institution further stated that it has established procedures for recording or content prod...

 TCN announces two-week power outage in Abuja The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a two-week power outage in parts of Abuja from October 28 to November 16 due to road construction.  Areas to be affected include Apo, Lokogoma, Guzape, Asokoro, Wuye, Utako, Jabi, and Idu. TCN said the outage will occur daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for safety reasons.

 12 Feared Dead in Kenya Plane Crash A small plane carrying 12 people crashed in a hilly, forested area of Kenya's coastal Kwale region killing all onboard The aircraft was headed to the renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Cessna Caravan-type plane went down about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Diani airstrip, minutes after takeoff, bursting into flames and leaving charred wreckage, authorities reported. Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde told The Associated Press that all passengers were foreign tourists, with nationalities to be confirmed later.  The exact breakdown of passengers and crew was not immediately available. Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before arriving at the scene to find unrecognizable human remains. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed 12 people were aboard and is investigating the cause.  Mombasa Air Safari, the operator, said it is cooperating with authorities and will provide updates through the aviation body.

The forum also focused attention on leadership role, industry and innovation in policy implementation that could sustain industrial development. Reviving local industries through policy, finance and infrastructure development were also discussed by the forum, which would strengthen  local manufacturing and  Patronage of Nigerian products and brand.  US government permanently revokes Wole Soyinka’s visa The US government has [permanently revoked the visa of Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka. Leadership reports that ‎Soyinka disclosed this at a media parley held in Lagos on Tuesday, October 28.  C’River gov presents ₦780.6bn 2026 budget to assembly Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has presented a ₦780.59 billion “Budget of Inclusive Growth” for 2026, marking a 17% rise from 2025. The budget allocates ₦519.6 billion for capital projects and ₦260.96 billion for recurrent spending. Otu said the budget prioritizes human development, healthcare, education, and social protection, shifting focus from GDP to the Human Development Index. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and infrastructure-driven growth.

 Akpabio, Yilwatda Urge Nigerians to Hold Governors Accountable Senate President Godswill Akpabio and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda have urged Nigerians to monitor how governors and local government chairmen utilise increased federal allocations. Speaking at separate events in Abuja, both leaders said higher revenue inflows must translate into development and job creation. Yilwatda noted that governors now receive up to four times previous allocations and should deliver more for their people. Akpabio also called on state assemblies to ensure transparency, stressing that increased revenues should improve citizens’ welfare.

 NEMA Receives 153 Stranded Nigerians from Chad The National Emergency Management Agency has received 153 Nigerians repatriated from Chad under the Assisted Voluntary Return Programme facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration. NEMA said the returnees — 105 adults, 45 children, and three infants — arrived in Lagos aboard an ASKY Airlines flight on Sunday and were provided with food, medical care, and counselling support.  Hurricane Melissa reaches record intensity as its eye nears Jamaica  Hurricane Melissa continues to strengthen as its eye nears Jamaica’s southwestern coast, with sustained winds now reaching 180 mph, making it one of the most intense hurricanes on record. Authorities have been urging residents and tourists to prepare for the storm, with many rushing to secure food, water, and other necessities ahead of likely prolonged power and communication outages. Officials are warning that the hurricane’s extreme winds could cause "total structural failure" in buildings near its core. Melissa has been moving slowly over the warm Caribbean waters but is now being pulled northeast by a cold front, placing the center of the storm on a path directly across the island.  Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales dies at 93 Prunella Scales, the beloved actress best known for her role as Sybil in the classic 1970s British sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died at her London home at the age of 93. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, shared on social media that she was watching the show the day before her passing. Fawlty Towers aired for two seasons on BBC Two in 1975 and 1979, with Scales starring opposite John Cleese as the sharp-witted Sybil Fawlty. Her career spanned decades and included roles in The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Boys From Brazil, Howards End, Wolf, An Awfully Big Adventure, and What the Butler Saw. Her sons expressed gratitude for the care she received in her final days, writing, “Her last days were comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love.” While no cause of death was disclosed, the family confirmed that Scales had been living with dementia in recent years.  Suspect in former Japanese prime minister’s killing pleads guilty The man accused of assassinating former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pleaded guilty on Tuesday. Tetsuo Yamagami, 45, appeared publicly for the first time since the killing and told Judge Shinichi Tanaka that he shot Abe because he held him responsible for the religious abuse he endured as a child. “Everything is true,” Yamagami said in court, adding, “there is no mistake that I did it.” His attorneys have requested leniency, citing his troubled upbringing and the influence of his mother, a follower of the Unification Church, who is set to testify in the trial. Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister since World War II, was allegedly targeted due to his perceived ties to the church, which was partly introduced to Japan by Abe’s grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuki Kishi, in 1954. Paramount to cut 1,000 jobs after merger with Skydance.  Paramount is set to lay off roughly 1,000 employees on Wednesday, with another 1,000 cuts expected later, as the studio works to streamline operations and reduce costs following its recent merger with Skydance. Most of the initial job losses will affect U.S.-based staff, though international employees are also likely to see reductions in the coming weeks. The merger, finalized in August for $8.4 billion, included a plan to achieve $2 billion in cost savings. The layoffs were originally scheduled for November but have been accelerated. Jeff Shell, president of the newly merged company, emphasized that the process would be handled as efficiently as possible, noting the company does not plan to have layoffs on a quarterly basis. In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Livinus Paul Jatau, the association lamented that escalating violence in Kachia and Kajuru Local Government Areas has created a “full-blown humanitarian crisis,” leaving hundreds dead and many communities displaced.  Kaduna Courts Shut Down As Judiciary Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Courts across Kaduna State were shut down on Monday as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) embarked on an indefinite strike, accusing the state government of failing to address their long-standing demands. In a statement issued after an emergency meeting, the union said it had been left with “no option but to explore all available avenues for an indefinite strike,” following what it described as the government’s continued silence on several correspondences, including letters dated September 1 and October 9, 2025. A Daily Trust correspondent observed that most courts within Kaduna metropolis were closed as early as 8:00 a.m., with JUSUN officials moving around to ensure full compliance with the strike directive.
