 MBAKPENEV FAMILY MEMBER FACES FRESH MACHINERY THEFT ALLEGATIONS IN ZAKI-BIAM A member of the Mbakpenev family from Ugbaam has been accused of committing another act of machinery theft in Zaki Biam, Benue State,only weeks after being released from police custody.   According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at approximately 9:00AM near Living Faith Church. Eyewitnesses stated that the suspect was seen in possession of the stolen machine and heading towards Channels 2.   This latest allegation has raised serious concerns within the community, as residents call for decisive measures to safeguard Ukum’s progress and ensure accountability. Authorities are expected to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action.

 Kaduna Govt Dismisses Reports On Reinstating 5-Day School Week, Says Decision Still Pending The Kaduna State Ministry of Education has refuted media claims that the government has reinstated the five-day school week system. Commissioner for Education, Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, clarified in an interview with journalists in Kaduna that the government has not yet adopted the system, stressing that it remains only a proposal under review with stakeholders. He explained that his earlier comments were misinterpreted by sections of the media and urged the public to disregard such reports. “The State Government has not made any decision on reintroducing the five-day school week,” Professor Sambo stated. He further appealed to journalists to ensure accuracy in their reporting so as not to mislead the public or create unnecessary tension.

 Thugs Disrupt El-Rufai’s Coalition Meeting In Kaduna, Injure Members, Damage Vehicles Several people were injured on Saturday when thugs attacked a coalition meeting of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna. The meeting, held at the Conference Hall of NUT Endwell in Magadishu Layout, was convened under the leadership of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai. Witnesses said the attackers stormed the venue while the meeting was in session. Windows of the hall were shattered, and windscreens of several vehicles, including one belonging to El-Rufai, were destroyed. Sources at the meeting added that some participants sustained serious injuries during the incident. The attack comes amid growing political tensions in the state. According to reports, the incident started in Igwama community where the deceased, who was said to be a food vendor, allegedly made statements considered offensive after an exchange with a young man.  Flames claim lives of three young children in Limpopo Police in Thohoyandou have launched an inquest after three young children died in a fire that gutted a one-room house at Itsani village on Friday. The victims, aged between two and four, were reportedly playing near the house before the blaze broke out. Police say it remains unclear how the children ended up inside the burning room. Emergency services arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the flames, but the children were found burned beyond recognition. Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe described the incident as shocking and confirmed that experts have been summoned to determine the cause of the fire. She also instructed investigators to probe the possibility of negligence charges against the parents or guardians. Investigations are continuing.

 Five people lost their lives on the N1 Ysterberg mountain  A devastating head-on collision between two sedans on the N1 Ysterberg mountain in Polokwane Municipality, Capricorn District, has claimed the lives of five people in the early hours of Saturday, August 30, 2025. The tragic incident has left four victims burned beyond recognition, while two others, including a driver and a passenger, survived the crash with injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. According to preliminary reports, one of the vehicles attempted to overtake, and recklessness can not be ruled out as a possible cause of the accident. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently investigating the matter. The Department of Transport has also expressed deep concern over the resurgence of accidents in the area, particularly during early and late hours when visibility is poor.  MAN GETS LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR KILLIING NIGERIAN BOXER  Nicholas Francis Giroux, 37, of Odenton in Maryland has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2024 murder of a Nigerian boxer, 27-year-old Isaiah Olugbemi. Shortly after an altercation between Giroux and Olugbemi last year, Giroux shot the rising boxer numerous times with a firearm. In February 2025, the killer confessed to the crime.  Giroux bagged life in prison in addition to 20 years for first-degree murder of Olugbemi. Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess agreed with the sentence meted out to Giroux, saying he was callous and devilish.  Olugbemi won the National Golden Gloves Championship in Washington, D.C., and several amateur fights and would have gone fully professional in January 2025 if he hadn't been killed.

 TRUMP REVOKES SECRET SERVICE PROTECTION FOR KAMALA HARRIS  President Donald Trump on Thursday revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice-President Kamala Harris. Effective Monday, all Secret Service protection for Harris will be withdrawn. By law, the Secret Service protects a VP for six months after leaving office. But former President Joe Biden signed an order giving Harris an additional one year of federal protection.  Shortly after taking office, Trump ended Secret Service protection for former national security adviser John R. Bolton; former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; former aide Brian Hook; and Biden's children Hunter and Ashley among others.

 Guinea gears up for campaigns on referendum to end military rule Guinea will on Sunday start the campaign period for a constitutional referendum for a return to civilian rule after the military seized power in 2021, AFP reported. The vote will be held on September 21. The draft constitution does not make it clear whether interim leader General Mamady Doumbouya could stand as a candidate in the next presidential election. But government officials and supporters have repeatedly called on Doumbouya to stand in the election. A "transition charter" drawn up shortly after the coup had stipulated that none of its leaders, government members or heads of institutions would be able to run. On Thursday the president of Guinea's national media regulatory authority, the HAC, declared that news outlets "must not give voice to political parties and organizations in conflict with the law, which are prohibited from operating".  TURKEY CUTS TIES WITH ISRAEL, CLOSES AIRSPACE In response to the ongoing Israeli war in Gaza, Turkey has revoked all diplomatic agreements with Israel. Trade ties are now severed and Turkey's airspace are closed to Israeli aircraft.  The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, announced that Turkey is suspending all economic relations with Israel “massacres” against Palestinians in Gaza. Fidan alleged that Israel is also making it impossible for humanitarian aids to reach Gaza and that regional disruption is underway. Turkey said it will continue to work with Qatar and Egypt to address Gaza conflicts.

 NIGERIANS TO PAY $80 FOR PACKAGES SENT TO US  The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) announced on Friday that starting from August 29, 2025, Nigerians will begin to pay $80 or its naira equivalent for every package sent to the US. While letters and documents are exempted from this new mandatory prepaid customs fee, NIPOST explained the new policy is in response to a US Executive Order for all postal shipments globally. NIPOST noted that US-bound shipments will be slower to process on account of this development, and deliveries may be delayed in certain instances. This is also because all shipments will henceforth undergo mandatory customs inspections before release.

 Stepfather in Court for Killing 14-Year-Old Stepdaughter A 43-year-old man, Malesela Mehlape, appeared in the Mankweng Magistrates’ Court yesterday for the murder of his stepdaughter, 14-year-old Rebotile Moloto. The incident happened in March this year at Ga-Thoka village outside Mankweng. Rebotile, a Grade 9 learner at Klaas Mothapo High School, was walking to school with a friend when she was attacked. Mehlape allegedly approached and stabbed her multiple times, resulting in her death.

 Tragic Stabbing at University of Venda Leaves First-Year Student Dead, Boyfriend in Custody In a shocking incident that has rocked the University of Venda (Univen) community, a first-year female student was stabbed to death in an off-campus residence, allegedly by her boyfriend, another student at the institution.  The 20-year-old victim, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in language practice, was found with multiple stab wounds to her upper body. The suspect, a 20-year-old second-year Bachelor of Environmental Sciences student, was arrested for murder and is currently under police guard in a medical facility after injuring himself while attempting to flee.  Mob Justice Incident in Makhuva Leads to Arrests A case of mob justice has gone wrong at Khanghela Section in Makhuva village, outside Giyani. On Thursday, a young man from the area was allegedly assaulted by members of the local Police Forum after he reportedly used vulgar words while under the influence of alcohol. Following the incident, police today arrested the wife of the forum’s chairperson, her child, and a former member of the forum after the victim opened a case of assault. The child was later released as he is a minor. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

A statement by Director, Press and Public Relations Federal Ministry of Education says for the avoidance of doubt, the FGN-ASUU Agreement was last signed in 2009. That agreement remains the most recent signed and binding agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU. Subsequently, in 2017, the then Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, inaugurated a renegotiation committee to review the 2009 agreement.  Nine People Rescued In Tudun Lona, Sokoto State Canoe Incident  Nine passengers have been rescued and a body of a 29-year-old man was recovered while an 80-year-old woman is still missing in a Thursday boat disaster  at Tudun Lona Jaranja River in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto state.  The Thursday boat disaster marked the third in two weeks in the state. It was reported that the canoe was conveying eleven passengers before it capsized.  Officials of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) alongside community volunteers, are coordinating efforts to recover the missing victim as search and rescue operations continue.  Nigerian Man Pleads Guilty to $400,000 Romance Scam On August 29, 2025, Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced that 40-year-old Nigerian national Daniel Chima Inweregbu pleaded guilty to orchestrating a sophisticated romance scam that defrauded multiple American citizens of over $400,000.  The guilty plea was entered on August 21, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Nanette Jolivette Brown, addressing charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, and using a false identity, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering.Court documents reveal that Inweregbu and his accomplices executed a romance scam from July 1, 2017, to December 16, 2018, targeting American women.  Using the alias “Larry Pham,” they created fake profiles on social media and dating platforms to lure middle-aged women seeking companionship.  The group built emotional connections with victims through online messaging and email, posing as a middle-aged man to gain their trust.Once ...
