DOMINICAN REPUBLIC REMOVES CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR HOMOSEXUALITY IN ARMED FORCES. (PHOTO).

Image
Dominican Republic removes criminal penalties for homosexuality in armed forces The Dominican Republic’s Constitutional Court has struck down laws that criminalized same-sex relationships within the National Police and Armed Forces. The ruling invalidates two articles in the justice codes of both institutions that previously imposed prison sentences on service members engaged in same-sex relationships—up to one year for officers and six months for enlisted personnel—under the justification of “maintaining discipline and institutional morality.” These provisions had been in place since the mid-20th century. The court determined that the laws violated fundamental rights, including privacy, equality before the law, and the free development of one’s personality. The decision came in response to a constitutional challenge filed by attorneys Anderson Dirocie de León and Patricia Santana, who argued that the disciplinary codes conflicted with rights recognized in the Dominican Constituti...

Pope Leo revises law to let women and non-cardinals lead Vatican City  Pope Leo XIV has revised Vatican law to allow women and non-cardinals to lead the administration of Vatican City, following Pope Francis’ groundbreaking appointment of a woman to the role in November. Francis appointed Italian Sister Raffaella Petrini, 52, as secretary-general of the Vatican governorate, making her the highest-ranking woman in the Vatican. However, her appointment faced legal complications under a 2023 law that restricted the position to cardinals. On Friday, Leo issued a motu proprio, a formal Vatican decree, updating the law to resolve the issue. In her role, Petrini manages administrative functions including the Vatican museums, post office, budget oversight, health care, and police operations. Previously, she was excluded from presenting the city-state’s economic report to cardinals ahead of the May conclave because only cardinals were allowed in those meetings. The law change corrects...

ARGENTINA MOVES TO SEIZE FORMER PRESIDENT’S ASSETS TO RECOVER $500M.(PHOTO).

Image
Argentina moves to seize former president’s assets to recover $500M BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - A federal court in Argentina has ordered the seizure of 20 properties belonging to former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and her children, Máximo and Florencia, in an effort to recover roughly $500 million allegedly lost to the state through corrupt practices. Authorities say the assets—including houses, land, and hotels—were acquired through corruption tied to public-works contracts awarded during the administrations of Fernández de Kirchner and her late husband, Néstor Kirchner. The ruling also covers properties linked to businessman Lázaro Báez, an ally of the family. The seizure is part of the “Vialidad” case, which investigates at least 51 contracts in Santa Cruz, the Kirchners’ home province, many of which prosecutors say were inflated, rushed through, or left incomplete. Fernández de Kirchner was sentenced in 2022 to six years in prison and barred from holding public offi...

The guidance lists nooses, swastikas, and any symbols adopted by hate groups representing racial, religious, or other intolerance as prohibited, with Confederate battle flags also remaining banned. The agency stressed that this is not a policy update, but a reaffirmation to counter misinformation.
