 NUJ COMMENDS TINUBU FOR APPOINTING FEMALE NTA BOSS The Abuja branch of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Barrister Stella Din Jacob as Executive Director (News) of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). The NUJ said Jacob is the first female Executive Director (News) at the NTA and that her legal and broadcasting expertise make her suitable for the new role. The council noted that Jacob had worked at Silverbird Group, Channels Television, TVC News, and others before coming to the NTA. She excelled at managing large newsrooms and shaping credible, balanced, and impactful news coverage.

 Education Official and Businesswoman Arrested for Corruption The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team has arrested a Chief Director at the Department of Education, Mrs. Gobonamang Doris Sibiya (59), and former Director of Tshela Bophelo Wellness Solution, Mr. Tshegofatso Kenabatho Gopane (44), together with the company, Tshela Bophelo Wellness Solution. They are facing charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering. It is alleged that in May 2020, the Department of Education awarded Tshela Bophelo Wellness Solution a tender worth over R6.5 million. The contract was for Covid-19 orientation and training, with ongoing support for 554 schools in the Head Office and five District Offices around Kimberley. Investigations revealed that Mrs. Sibiya motivated for the company to receive the contract under the single service provider method, even though it did not meet the required standards.  Five Online Robbery Suspects Injured in Midrand Police Shootout Five men suspected of running an online car sale scam were injured and arrested during a shootout with police in Midrand on Monday afternoon. The suspects are alleged to have lured unsuspecting buyers through Facebook Marketplace. Police were tipped off by a potential victim who had previously fallen prey to a similar scam. During an undercover operation, the suspects reportedly opened fire on officers, leading police to retaliate. All five men sustained injuries and were taken into custody. Two firearms were recovered at the scene. One police officer was also injured in the leg during the exchange of fire and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The influencers, led by Cyan Boujee, came under heavy criticism for endorsing the scheme, which promised to relocate young women to Tatarstan, Russia, to work and study. Concerns grew after it was revealed that Interpol is investigating the programme for possible links to human trafficking and alleged involvement in producing drones used in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  EFCC Arrests 37 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Taraba State Operatives of the Makurdi Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  have arrested 37 suspected internet fraudsters in Wukari,  Taraba State. They were arrested behind  Federal University,  Wukari, Taraba State on Wednesday August 27, 2027 following credible intelligence on  their suspected  involvement in cybercrimes.  Items recovered from them include; two cars,  12 laptops and 46 phones.  Nigerian monarch jailed in US over $4.2M Covid-19 fraud A Nigerian monarch has been jailed for four years in the US for leading a scheme to exploit COVID-19 emergency loan programmes that were created for struggling businesses. Joseph Oloyede, 62, had pleaded guilty in April to three charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and engaging in monetary transactions in criminally derived property. He was handed 56 months in prison by a US District Judge, the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio said in a statement, TRT Afrika reported. Oloyede holds Nigerian and US citizenship and resides in Medina, Ohio. He holds the position of a traditional ruler in the city of Ipetumodu in Nigeria’s Osun state.  Imo State Governor Increases Minimum Wage for Doctors and lecturers Governor Uzodimma made the announcement on Tuesday night during a meeting with labour union leaders at the Government House, Owerri.  UNIZIK announces reason for Ban on “Signing Out” Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has clarified its decision to ban the popular “signing out” celebrations after final exams.  Man beats wife to death in Ekiti A woman simply identified as Modupe Alasin has died after she was mercilessly beaten by her husband in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State over lateness to farm. According to a witness who pleaded anonymity, the woman screamed and begged for mercy as the husband flogged her repeatedly. After a few minutes, the man ordered the woman to get water from the nearby stream but she slumped and died beside it as a result of weakness. When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Ekiti State Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu confirmed the incident, saying the husband had been arrested for further investigation.

 NAFDAC Returns ₦5 Million To A Store Owner NAFDAC has returned a ₦5 million cheque to its owner, Mr. Godfrey Chukwudi. The money was discovered during the Open Drug Market operation at Tenant Road, Aba, Abia State. The sum was counted in the presence of officials from the DSS, the Military, and the Police, who participated in the operation. Following clearance, it was confirmed that the funds belonged to a POS operator. The money was subsequently returned in the presence of Mr. Chima Amadi, Chairman of the Ekumi Traders Medicine Dealers Association Union, alongside NAFDAC Directors, Pharm. Shaba Mohammed (fsi) and Dr. Martins Iluyomade (fsi).
