The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the development of new academic standards that will pave the way for Tiv and Nupe language degree programmes in Nigerian universities.
According to the commission, work has already begun on the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for the proposed Bachelor of Arts programmes. Executive secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, has authorised the engagement of language experts drawn from universities across the country to lead the curriculum design.
The four-day curriculum development session took place at the NUC Secretariat from October 21 to 24, 2025, with top professors in attendance.
During a courtesy visit to the executive secretary, the acting director of academic planning, Mallam Abubakar Girei represented by deputy director Dr. Esther Mmeka formally introduced the resource team. Professor Ribadu then flagged off the process, praising the experts for heeding the call and encouraging them to deliver a quality framework.
He noted that the commission’s move to develop CCMAS for more indigenous languages marks an important step toward strengthening teaching, research, and preservation of Nigeria’s linguistic heritage.
Responding on behalf of the teams, Professors Mary Adebayo and Rebecca K. D. pledged to produce a robust curriculum that will elevate the study of Tiv and Nupe.
The Tiv curriculum team includes Professors Muhammad Alkali and Musa Bawa, alongside NUC representatives Florence Onuoha and Chinenye Augustine.
The Nupe team comprises Professors John Akosu Adeiyongo and Nguton Sambe, with Kate Omotayo Onaiyekan and Hadiza Kalla representing the commission.
