Governor Otti Faces Condemnation Over Verbal Attack on Journalist During Media Chat

The International Press Centre (IPC) has strongly condemned Abia State Governor Alex C. Otti for verbally assaulting journalist Chika Nwabueze during a recent media chat in the state.

The incident occurred on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the governor's monthly media engagement session in Umuahia. Chika Nwabueze, a reporter with Don Media Group, asked Governor Otti to provide verifiable data demonstrating how his administration's policies have improved Abia's economic conditions and residents' living standards beyond visible infrastructure developments, such as road construction.

In response, Governor Otti reacted sharply, describing the question as “irresponsible” and stating: “The fact that we keep this media chat open does not mean that someone should be stupid.”

IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade described the governor’s outburst as “very condescending” and entirely inappropriate for an elected official.

“The Governor’s angry reaction was very condescending and not expected of an elected leader who has the responsibility to give account to the citizens who voted him into office,” Arogundade stated.

He further stressed that the journalist was fully within his rights: “Mr. Chika was within his constitutional and professional rights as a journalist to ask the governor the question. Any public figure, especially a duty bearer, should expect to be subjected to public scrutiny.”

The International Press Centre has demanded that Governor Otti issue a public apology to Chika Nwabueze for the verbal assault. The organisation also reminded all public office holders of their duty to remain accountable and receptive to legitimate questions and scrutiny from both the media and the public.
