AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and comply fully with the permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangements under the agreement, T...

ARMY RETURNS TO STRATEGIC EAST CONGO TOWN AFTER REBEL WITHDRAWAL. (PHOTO).

Army returns to strategic east Congo town after rebel withdrawal Congolese soldiers and combatants from a pro-government militia have re-entered the eastern town of Uvira, residents said on Monday, just over a month after it fell to Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in a blow to peace efforts mediated by the Trump administration. M23 entered Uvira, an important base for the Congolese army near the border with Burundi, on December 10, days after Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan leader Paul Kagame met President Donald Trump in Washington and reaffirmed a U.S.-brokered peace deal. The capture marked the rebels' biggest gains in months, fueling fears of regional spillover from fighting that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands in the last year. M23 staged a lightning advance in January 2025 and still holds more territory than ever before, including Goma and Bukavu, the capitals of North and South Kivu provinces respectively. MOROCCO FILES COMPLAINT WITH FIFA AGAINST SENEGAL AFTER AFCON FINAL LOSS. (PHOTO)

Morocco files complaint with FIFA against Senegal after AFCON final loss The Moroccan Football Federation said on Monday it has formally referred to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA incidents involving Senegalese players and supporters protesting a penalty to Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final, AFP reported. Senegal's protest in added time of normal play during Sunday night's clash in Rabat led to the match being paused for nearly 20 minutes as the players walked off the pitch in anger. The AFCON hosts' football federation said these acts "had a significant impact on the normal course of the match and on the players' performance", with Morocco then missing the penalty that could have granted them their first African title in 50 years. The federation said "it will resort to legal procedures" with CAF, the tournament's organising body, and FIFA "in order to rule on the withdrawal of the Senegalese national team fro...

Image
Morocco's remorseful Diaz apologises for penalty miss in AFCON final Morocco's Brahim Diaz has apologised for his Panenka penalty miss that cost his country the Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday, saying his "soul hurts" and he took responsibility for the 1-0 defeat by Senegal in the decider in Rabat. Morocco were awarded a spot-kick in the 98th minute after Diaz was hauled to the ground by defender El Hadji Malick Diouf, an incident that sparked unrest in the stands and on the pitch. It followed five minutes after a disallowed goal at the other end and the decision, made on Video Assistant Referee review, resulted in some Senegal players leaving the pitch in protest, encouraged by their coach Pape Bouna Thiaw. It took over 14 minutes for calm to be restored and the game to resume, only for Diaz to inexplicably attempt a weak chipped penalty that was easily caught by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Diaz says he takes 'full responsibility' It proved one of the la...

SOUTH SUDAN OPPOSITION FORCES CALL FOR MARCH ON JUBA AFTER BATTLEFIELD GAINS . (PHOTO).

Image
South Sudan opposition forces call for march on Juba after battlefield gains  South Sudan's main opposition faction called on its forces on Monday to advance on the capital Juba after they captured a strategic town last week. It was not clear whether the Sudan People's Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO), which battled forces loyal to President Salva Kiir during a 2013-18 civil war, could credibly threaten Juba. But the call signalled an escalation in the SPLA-IO's rhetoric and ambitions following months of intense clashes around the country that the United Nations has said are occurring at a scale not seen since 2017. The SPLA-IO seized the town of Pajut, which is more than 300 km (180 miles) north of the capital, in heavy fighting last week in the north of Jonglei State. Pajut's capture puts the state capital of Bor within striking distance of the SPLA-IO. Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Wisley Welebe Samson ordered SPLA-IO forces "to move to Juba from ...

Authorities have described the violence as driven by foreign-backed actors and accused the U.S. and Israel of supporting rioters. Tensions had escalated earlier this month when government forces pushed eastward, prompting the SDF to largely retreat after clashes in eastern Aleppo province. Syria’s Defense Ministry said it had ordered a halt to fighting on the front lines following the agreement. The SDF has not formally confirmed the deal or issued a comment. Since the government’s campaign began, Damascus has regained control of key areas in Deir el-Zour and Raqqa provinces, which include vital oil and gas fields, river dams along the Euphrates, and several border crossings. The two leaders had urged Trump to de-escalate tensions after he announced tariffs on European allies who refused to allow the U.S. to take control of Greenland, and they requested a phone call to discuss the matter. Gumi made the allegation while reacting to a social media post by a former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, who cited a report by The New York Times questioning the credibility of the genocide narrative. According to Sani, the report revealed that the claims were largely based on unverified information allegedly supplied by an individual identified as Emeka, an Onitsha-based screwdriver trader and operator of a small non-governmental organisation. The report claimed that Emeka asserted he had documented about 125,000 Christian deaths through Google searches. Sani described the situation as “unfortunate and tragic,” wondering how such an unsubstan...

When you hear about a "twister in Texas", you don't expect it to be a loss prevention officer's left nipple.  A Texas woman must have had a particularly bad day last Tuesday. It caused her to make a series of bad decisions that left one male officer with a tender nipple and landed her in jail.  40-year-old Keri Aultz entered the Market Basket (a grocery store) in Beaumont, Texas on Tuesday evening with two objectives in mind. Feminine pads and chocolate. I think it's safe to say her Aunt Flo was making a visit. Unfortunately, despite her need for pads and her desire for chocolate, Keri was short on funds.   With this in mind, Keri opted to apply her five fingered discount in order to procure her items. Unfortunately, the store's loss prevention officer chose not to honor that particular discount, and a chaotic scene ensued. As Keri was exiting the store with two bags of Hershey's chocolates (a good choice) and a package of feminine pads, the officer attem...
