 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  RIVERS STATE CHIEF JUDGE DECLINES HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY'S REQUEST TO PROBE GOVERNOR FUBARA AND DEPUTY The Rivers Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi has declined House of Assembly's Request to probe Governor Siminalayi Fubara and deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. This is contained in a letter personally signed by him and addressed to the speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule. The State chief judge in the letter acknowledged receipt of the House's resolution requesting him to set up a seven-man panel against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, but stated that he is restrained by a subsisting court order.   Chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky died from abnormal heartbeat after accidental overdose    Daniel Naroditsky, a prominent American chess grandmaster and popular online figure, died from an abnormal heart rhythm triggered by an accidental overdose, according to a toxicology report released by North Carolina authorities. Naroditsky was found dead at his home in October at age 29. The report said multiple substances were present in his system, including methamphetamine and kratom, a psychoactive substance derived from a tropical plant that is sometimes marketed in supplements, gummies, and energy products. Investigators said the combination of drugs led to a fatal cardiac event. Naroditsky was last confirmed alive on Oct. 18, when he accepted a food delivery.  Ford recalls over 100,000 vehicles for possible fire hazard Ford is recalling more than 110,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential fire risk linked to a faulty engine block heater. The recall, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Jan. 15, affects certain 2013–2019 Ford Escape, Ford Focus, and Lincoln models, along with 2,633 engine block heaters sold as accessories. The defective heaters can crack and leak coolant, which may cause a short circuit when plugged in and increase the risk of fire. The parts can be identified by numbers CV6Z-6A051-CA and CV6Z-6A051-AA. Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until it is replaced. Dealerships will contact customers with instructions for returning the part for a full refund or for a free replacement once the updated part becomes available.  Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin launches satellite internet service to compete with SpaceX and Amazon  Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin announced plans to deploy 5,408 satellites to create a high-speed communications network designed to compete with SpaceX and Amazon. The new network, called TeraWave, will target enterprise, government, and data center customers, offering data speeds of up to 6 terabits per second. Satellites will operate in low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit, ranging from about 100 miles to 21,000 miles above the planet. Blue Origin expects to begin launching the constellation in the fourth quarter of 2027. The move puts Bezos in a competitive satellite internet market currently led by SpaceX’s Starlink, which operates over 9,000 satellites and serves roughly 9 million users.  Israeli strike kills three journalists in Gaza  An Israeli air strike on Wednesday killed three journalists in Gaza, including an AFP freelancer, the territory’s civil defense agency reported. The Israeli military said the strike targeted “suspects” operating a drone. The civil defense said the journalists—Mohammed Salah Qashta, Abdul Raouf Shaat, and Anas Ghneim—were killed in the Al-Zahra area southwest of Gaza City, and their bodies were taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. Shaat regularly contributed to AFP but was not on assignment at the time. The Israeli military stated that troops had identified individuals operating a drone “affiliated with Hamas” in central Gaza and struck them due to the threat posed.  Threads launches ads for all users globally Meta announced Wednesday that it is rolling out ads on Threads to all users worldwide. The rollout will begin next week and will be gradual, with the company noting that it could take several months before ads reach every user. Threads, Meta’s social app and rival to X, has grown rapidly since its July 2023 launch, now reaching over 400 million monthly active users. The app hit 200 million users by mid-2024, 320 million by January 2025, and added another 30 million users last April. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has touted Threads as a potential billion-user platform in the coming years. Ads on Threads have been in testing for some time. The platform first experimented with ads in the U.S. and Japan a year ago, then opened global advertising to brands last April.  COURT REMANDS TARABA WOMAN OVER ALLEGED RAZOR ATTACK ON 17-YEAR-OLD GIRL  22nd January, 2026    A married woman, Mrs. Ramatu Abbas of Donga Local Government Area in Taraba State, has been remanded in Wukari Correctional Centre over allegations that she attacked a 17-year-old girl with a razor blade. The victim, Iwasen Terhemba, reportedly came under attack after being accused of having an affair with Mrs. Abbas’ husband. The incident has stirred widespread concern among residents of the area. The Chief Magistrate Court in Donga ordered that Mrs. Abbas remain in custody pending further investigation, with the case adjourned to a later date.  Police arrests officers for harassing content creator along Lagos airport road The Airport Police Command  says it has taken note of a video currently circulating on social media involving police personnel of the Command and an Instagram content creator, teaserprank2, following a routine stop-and-search operation. In a video making the rounds, the content creator said he had gone to pick up a friend from the airport and while returning home, he was stopped by some officers along the airport road. He alleged that the officers searched the trunk of his car and after finding nothing implicating, went on to accuse him and his friends of being thieves. He said the incident escalated when he resisted going to their office with them. He said that the officers treated him badly as if he was a criminal.  Scholar Transport Driver Abandons Bail in Court After Fatal Crash That Killed 14 Learners  A 22-year-old scholar transport driver, Ayanda Dludla, appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court, where he abandoned his bail application. Dludla is facing 14 counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and additional charges of operating a motor vehicle without a certificate of fitness, driving without a professional driving permit, and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle. It is alleged that on 19 January 2026, Dludla was driving a scholar transport vehicle along the R553 Golden Highway while transporting 16 learners when the vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming truck. Fourteen learners died as a result of the crash, while two learners and the truck driver sustained injuries. During his court appearance, the accused chose not to apply for bail. The case was postponed to 05 March 2026 for further investigations.

 SUPREME COURT DISMISSES TRIAL OF MAJOR HAMZA AL-MUSTAPHA IN KUDIRAT ABIOLA'S MURDER.  The supreme court has dismissed the trial of the former chief security officer to the late military head of state, General Sani Abacha, Hamza Al-Mustapha in the murder of the wife of the  late politician,MKO Abiola, late  Kudirat Abiola. Kudirat Abiola was the wife of the late businessman and  politician, MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the june 12, 1993 presidential election that was annulled by former president Ibrahim Babangida.   Kudirat Abiola was murdered in Lagos in the nationwide crisis that followed the annulment and in the course of her persistent struggle to get the annulment reversed by the military.  The trial of Al-Mustapha in the murder charge brought against him by the Lagos state government was  however, put to rest with the verdict of a 5-man panel of justices of the supreme court headed by justice Uwani Aba-Aji.  The supreme court in a...

 Uganda police detain opposition lawmaker after at least seven killed Uganda police said on Thursday they had detained a legislator and senior official of the country's biggest opposition party for his alleged role in election-related violence in which at least seven people were killed. The lawmaker, Muwanga Kivumbi, is vice president of the opposition National Unity Platform party headed by pop star-turned-politician, Bobi Wine, who has been in hiding since last week. Wine, whose legal name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said he fled a military raid on his house hours before veteran President Yoweri Museveni was declared the landslide winner of the January 15 presidential election.  Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has condemned the prolonged detention of medical doctor and Abia State University lecturer, Dr Okechukwu Kenneth Nwafor, describing it as a flagrant violation of the Constitution and Nigeria’s criminal justice laws. Falana disclosed this on Tuesday during a courtesy visit organised by the Uturu Development Association of Nigeria (UDAN) Worldwide to thank him for securing Nwafor’s release after more than three years in detention. He said the circumstances of the doctor’s incarceration represented a disturbing abuse of state power and a failure of due process.
