 80,812 Prison Population, 64% Awaiting Trial Inmates - Correctional Service ‎ ‎Awaiting trial inmates now account for 64 percent of Nigeria’s custodial population, as the Nigeria Correctional Service seeks ₦198.85 billion for its 2026 operations.  Controller-General of the Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, made this known while presenting the agency’s 2025 budget performance and 2026 estimates before the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions in Abuja, highlighting congestion across correctional facilities and the need for more infrastructure.  According to him, as of February 9, 2026, the total inmate population stood at 80,812.  Owo Church Attack: 8th DSS Witness Testifies In Court In The Ongoing Trial An eighth witness of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the ongoing trial of suspected attackers of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, in 2022, on Wednesday corroborated the testimony of a 7th witness who identified one of the suspects as being part of those who carried out the attack. The 8th witness also identified the 2nd defendant, Al Quasim Idris, as being part of those who allegedly killed the worshippers. The witness, an Amotekun operative, told the Court in Abuja that he was one of the officers who arrived in the church premises shortly after the attack.  ARIK AIR DIVERTS SAFELY TO BENIN FOLLOWING ENGINE ANOMALY Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau NSIB has commenced an investigation into the air accident involving arik air's boeing 737 aircraft which diverted to Benin airport due to an engine anomaly while flying from Lagos to Port Harcourt Wednesday morning, 11 of February 2026.  NSIB says during the cruise phase of flight the crew detected abnormal indications on one of the engines, the crew then shut down the affected engine and landed safely. No injury was recorded. While an investigation is ongoing in to the issue, NSIB says a preliminary report will be issued within 30 days in accordance with international civil aviation authority icao provisions.  El-Rufai raises alarm over alleged plans to get him arrested Former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government may arrest him. El-Rufai, a chieftain of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated this in an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, February 11.  New data from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), shows that Nigerian states paid N455.38 billion in foreign debt service in 2025, up from N362.08 billion in 2024. This represents a year-on-year increase of N93.30 billion, or 25.77 per cent. The rise indicates that states devoted a larger portion of their FAAC allocations to external debt obligations in 2025, leaving less fiscal space for salaries, capital projects, and routine governance. A closer look shows a concentration of foreign debt service among a few states. The top 10 states accounted for 68.57% of the total in 2025. Lagos led with N92.80 billion, up from N72.32 billion in 2024 (28.33%). Rivers followed with N48.58 billion, more than doubling from N23.13 billion in 2024 (110.02%). Kaduna recorded N47.93 billion, up N2.34 billion (5.13%). Ogun’s deductions more than doubled to N25.20 billion from N11.99 billion (110.22%).  POLICE ARREST SUSPECT OF IED EXPLOSION IN YENAGOA The Bayelsa State Police Command says it has arrested one man suspected of triggering IED, Wednesday, within the State Secretariat Complex, Yenagoa. This follows a swift response as the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command Iyamah Daniel Edebor who immediately led the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit and other Tactical Teams to the scene where the incident occurred. Ismail Abba Yusuf as the new Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON).  The appointment is subject to the Senate's approval in accordance with the provisions of section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2006. President Tinubu sent a letter today to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, requesting the expeditious confirmation of Ambassador Yusuf to replace Professor Abdullahi Usman, who resigned this week, after about 14 months in the post.  Ambassador Yusuf is a seasoned Nigerian career diplomat who served as the Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye from 2021 to 2024.  PRESS RELEASE  TROOPS OF OPHK LAUNCH DECISIVE COUNTER- OFFENSIVE, NEUTRALISE ISWAP, RECOVER LOGISTICS IN BORNO Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have once again demonstrated exceptional resolve and operational superiority by swiftly repelling an ISWAP attack, and launching a devastating follow-on counter-offensive. This decisive action has significantly degraded terrorist capabilities, disrupted their logistics, and reaffirmed OPHK’s unwavering commitment to dismantling terrorist networks across the North East region. On 5 February 2026 at approximately some minutes to midnight, ISWAP terrorists conducted a failed attack on Forward Operating Base (FOB) Auno. Troops of Sector 1 thwarted  the assault with disciplined firepower and tactical precision.
