NIGERIA ISSUES ADVISORY FOR NIGERIANS IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN AND NEIGHBOURING GULF COUNTRIES FOLLOWING REGIONAL MILITARY ACTIONS. (PH). #PRESS RELEASE
Pope Leo XIV on Sunday condemned the escalating violence in the Middle East, particularly the recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, warning that the conflict risks creating a "spiral of violence" that could become "an unbridgeable chasm." Speaking during his weekly address at St. Peter's Square, the pope stressed that "stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death, but only through reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue."
The pontiff, the first American pope, has previously criticized the Trump administration’s foreign and domestic policies, including its approach to NATO allies, immigration enforcement, and military operations in the Caribbean. His remarks come amid a major escalation in the region: U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iranian military targets over the weekend, and Iran retaliated with missile attacks on bases in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, the UAE, and Jordan. Former Iranian crown prince Reza Pahlavi, speaking from exile, described the strikes as a "humanitarian intervention" and signaled his willingness to serve as a transitional leader if the Iranian regime falls.
