Woody Harrelson’s childhood was marked by a shocking revelation: his father, Charles Voyde Harrelson, was convicted of assassinating federal judge John H. Wood Jr. in 1979. The killing, carried out outside the judge’s Texas home, was the first assassination of a federal judge in the 20th century and sent ripples across the nation. 

For Woody, the news was deeply personal and bewildering he struggled to reconcile the man in the headlines with the father he barely knew. Charles was ultimately sentenced to two life terms after being found guilty of carrying out the hit for a drug trafficker awaiting trial.
