Serena Williams falls to 20-year-old Maya Joint in Wimbledon return after nearly four-year singles absence Serena Williams showed flashes of the power and precision that defined her Hall of Fame career in her return to professional singles tennis Tuesday, but ultimately fell short in a three-set opening-round loss at Wimbledon. The 44-year-old Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, was defeated 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 by 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint in a match that lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes on Centre Court. It marked Williams’ first singles appearance in nearly four years, since the 2022 U.S. Open. Williams still produced trademark moments, including powerful serves and heavy groundstrokes that once carried her to seven Wimbledon singles titles. But Joint, ranked 87th, absorbed the pace and proved steadier on the biggest points, repeatedly finding angles that pushed Williams out of position. “I don’t know what just happened, to be honest,” Joint said afterward. “I didn’t get ...

U.S MISSIONARY, ALEX BARBIR ACCUSES BENUE GOVT OF BLOCKING ₦60M YELEWATA MARKET REBUILD, PEGGING PROJECT AT ₦300M

7th February, 2026

An American missionary and humanitarian worker, Mr. Alex Barbir, has accused the Benue State Government of frustrating his organisation’s ₦60 million proposal to rebuild the Yelewata market, only to later inflate the cost of the same project to ₦300 million.

Barbir, founder of the Building Zion initiative, made the allegation in a video circulating widely on social media, where he claimed that his team submitted a comprehensive and cost-effective plan to reconstruct the market, which was reportedly destroyed during communal clashes in Guma Local Government Area.

According to him, the proposal was aimed at delivering durable and functional market structures using quality materials at a significantly reduced cost. However, he alleged that the state government blocked the offer, before subsequently presenting a ₦300 million estimate for the identical reconstruction work.

The missionary further stated that Building Zion had already demonstrated its capacity in the community. He recalled that on January 31, the organisation handed over 35 newly constructed houses to victims of a massacre in Yelewata, providing shelter for displaced families at no financial cost to the state.

Barbir argued that the wide gap between the two cost estimates raises serious questions about transparency, efficiency and accountability in the execution of public projects, particularly in communities affected by violence and displacement.

His claims have since sparked reactions on social media, with residents and civil society voices calling for an independent review of the Yelewata market reconstruction process to ensure value for money and public interest. Others have urged the Benue State Government to respond promptly and clarify its position on the project.

Benue Info-pedia reports that, as of the time of this report, the Benue State Government has not issued an official response to the allegations.
