As part of efforts to monitor compliance of schools with the Lagos State 2019/2020 academic calendar, the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) team has embarked on monitoring across the State.
Speaking on the exercise during the visit to schools under Education District IV, the Director-General of the Agency and team leader, Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni said most schools complied with the academic calendar but noted that there is always room for improvement.
In her words, "I hope we don't get to the point where we see that things are imperfect, because that will signify that we are not looking deeply enough. The whole reason why Quality Assurance exists is because we understand that there is going to constantly be a reason to improve, one way or the other, to support schools and students”.
"It is good to see students in schools, ready to learn. However, we are not resting on our oars because as an agency, we are expecting that through our monitoring exercise and frequent visits to schools we can design relevant programmes and policies based on collated data to address anomalies in the system”, she added.
Seriki-Ayeni encouraged teachers to continue to help reposition the State's educational system in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda of the present administration by giving their best in the dispensation of quality knowledge for the benefit of the students.
The Director-General assured that the agency will frequently interface with key players, through trainings and stakeholder meetings to ensure transparency, adding that this will also help OEQA evaluators on monitoring exercise keep abreast of the parameters required to set standards for schools.
“We are not out to police or apprehend people. What we are doing is to support teachers, our principals and, ultimately, our students. All of this can only occur when there is a cordial relationship. We have to start thinking outside the box for ways to involve all stakeholders, so we can thrive towards the result that we want", she stated.
Some of the schools visited by the monitoring team include Obele Senior and Junior High Schools, Ideal Girls Senior and Junior High Schools, Government College Senior and Junior Schools, Eric Moore Senior and Junior High Schools and Onitolo Community Senior and Junior High School, all in Surulere area of the State.
