The Lagos State House of Assembly has held a Stakeholders’ Public Hearing on the Bill for a law to amend the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Law 2019 in order to incorporate the Amotekun security initiative.
Speaking during the ceremony held at the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex, Alausa, Rt. Honourable Mudasiru Obasa said the Amotekun Security outfit has come to stay, adding that the Neighbourhood Safety Corps will be reorganised to accommodate the Southwest security outfit Amotekun.
“Kindly note that our challenges here in Lagos are quite different from other States in this part of the country and in that wisdom we are going to look at this bill and make sure we do justice to it. The most important thing is that Amotekun has come to stay and we must give it necessary recognition”, he said
The Speaker explained that in 2016 the Neighbourhood Safety Corps bill was initiated to support the Nigeria Police and other security organisations, as part of efforts by the State government to combat the security situation in Lagos.
While urging stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the hearing in order to guide the LAHA Committee in making a suitable decision on the amendment, Obasa stressed that the House would not fail in their responsibility to enact an appropriate bill in line with the need to protect the lives and property of all resident in the State.
Earlier, the Honourable Chairman, Committee on Information and Security, Mr. Tunde Buraimoh said the State House of Assembly is poised to make laws for the good governance of Lagos State in the interest of the people while ensuring judicious use of State resources for the maximum benefit of Lagosians.
“At this juncture, I must not fail to remind us that this current exercise on this security bill is not new or novel. As a matter of fact, what is being done is but an amendment to amplify or further propagate the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNC) Law 2016”, he said.
While informing that the public hearing is in fulfilment of the customary and conventional procedures of passing laws in Lagos State, Buraimoh noted that the gathering was meant to stimulate and engender robust and vital contributions that will make the proposed law popular, acceptable and impactful in Lagos State.
The Chairman enjoined contributors to be mindful of the limitations as contained in the second schedule of the 1999 constitution as amended.
Dignitaries at the Public Hearing include the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo; Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso and Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Dr. Wale Ahmed, amongst others.More photos below.
