Iran threatens to assassinate Netanyahu as Gulf conflict escalates
Tehran on Sunday issued a direct threat to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the conflict between the U.S. and Israel against Iran intensified, further straining energy security in the Gulf. The country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would “pursue and kill” Netanyahu, whom it called a “child-killer,” if he remained alive.
Israel responded with targeted strikes against key Iranian figures and facilities over the weekend. The Israel Defense Forces reported the elimination of two senior intelligence officials associated with the “Khatam al-Anbiya” Emergency Command. Additional attacks included Iran’s Space Agency research center and a factory producing aerial defense systems. Iran continued retaliatory actions in the region, with central Israel experiencing a missile barrage, though no injuries were reported.
The ongoing conflict has disrupted oil operations, including at the UAE’s Fujairah port, where activity resumed after a brief halt caused by a fire from intercepted drone debris. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy chokepoint, remains under tension, pushing Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel for consecutive days and marking a more than 40% surge since hostilities began.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he ordered an airstrike on Iran’s Kharg Island, a key oil export hub, and warned of further attacks while urging allies to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that Iranian strikes target only U.S. interests, not civilian areas, and proposed a regional committee to examine the attacks.
The conflict’s ripple effects are also affecting major events in the Gulf, including the cancellation of Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia scheduled for April, citing safety and logistical concerns amid the escalating war.
