A Mass Communication alumnus of Kaduna Polytechnic, and Kaduna based Journalist, Okpani Austine Agbo Emmanuel, has defended the student who recently brought the alleged overzealous enforcement of the institution’s dress code into public discourse, describing her action as a courageous step that has helped expose concerns many students may have endured in silence.
Okpani Agbo, on his verified social media handle on Saturday, said the student had done the institution a “great favour” by drawing public attention to an issue that may have affected several students without the courage or opportunity to speak out.
According to him, in a democratic society, protests of such nature serve as a legitimate channel through which citizens can air their grievances and demand necessary reforms.
He noted that issues relating to the enforcement of institutional policies deserve public scrutiny in order to prevent abuses and ensure that disciplinary measures are applied with fairness and respect for the rights of students.
“By bringing the matter to public attention, the student has opened the door for necessary reflection on how such policies are enforced within an institution of repute like Kaduna Polytechnic,” he stated.
The media professional also urged the management of the institution to make public the outcome of any disciplinary action taken against the staff member involved in the incident.
According to him, such transparency would mark a significant departure from the mere issuance of press statements that fail to address the concerns raised or acknowledge the grievances of students whose rights may have been violated.
He further cautioned the institution against taking any action that could be interpreted as victimising students involved in the incident, warning that such a move could reinforce speculations already circulating in the public space and further inflame an already fragile situation.
Emmanuel therefore appealed to the management and relevant authorities of Kaduna Polytechnic to ensure that the matter is handled with transparency and caution in order to prevent the situation from escalating.
