Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, has reiterated the commitment of the State Government towards the elderly, stressing that they must not be neglected in the scheme of things.
He stated this on Thursday at an event organised by the Ministry to mark the “International Day of the Elderly" at the People's Home, Yaba.
Mr. Ogunlende noted that the elderly had contributed tremendously to building the nation while they were much younger in various sectors they worked as a result of which the nation got to the level it is today, adding that they deserve fair treatment in return for their services in the past.
The Permanent Secretary, Pharm (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-osanyintolu assured the elderly that the State Government through the Ministry would continue to implement policies and programmes that would give them a sense of belonging so long as they reside in Lagos State.
Her words: "This programme is to let our elderly know that they are very important to us. It aligns with the Social Inclusion Policy of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of leaving no one behind irrespective of gender, age, class or tribe. Mr Governor wants everyone to feel the impact of good governance. It is an administration that cares for all and sundry. We will continue to celebrate our elderly because they laid the foundation on which we are building. It will be a disservice for us to neglect them simply because they have become senior citizens".
The Guest Speaker, Mrs. Joan Kpandei, spoke extensively to the elderly on what they need to do and what they must avoid to enjoy sound health in their old age pointing out that old age sometimes comes with some health challenges.
