White House to reopen public tours in December with revised route

The White House announced Friday that public tours will resume in December with a “updated route” following a pause over the summer for construction on President Trump’s proposed ballroom.

Tours will restart on Dec. 2, the first lady’s office said, offering visitors a chance to experience the history and architecture of the White House, coinciding with holiday decorations. Public tours are coordinated through congressional offices, with January slots to be made available to members of Congress in December.

Tours were suspended in August as construction on the ballroom began. The project has included demolition of the East Wing, sparking criticism from historians, preservation groups, and critics of President Trump. Officials maintain the demolition was necessary to adjust construction plans and have emphasized that the $300 million cost will be funded by private donations. Reports indicate First Lady Melania Trump privately expressed concerns over the East Wing demolition, which previously housed her offices and staff.
