7-year-old Abel Friday-Williams was recovered from the water of a small pond in Hickory City at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 2nd.
According to Abel's aunt Brianna Sledge, "It breaks my heart because he saved his friend and lost his."
Abel had gone to Bruce Meisner Park with a friend and an adult on Thursday. At some point Abel and his friend whose name has not been released, left the park and made their way to a nearby pond and waterfall that are part of the Hickory City waste water treatment pump station where the tragedy occurred. Their a path there however the city said the area is not for public use and the city did not put the path there.
Few details have been made public at this time. However, local authorities are investigating the incident. Abel's aunt warns others to not let their children play in this area.
This isn't the first time a child has had to be saved from the pond. The pond is known for being very slick due to slime and hard to exit due to the rocks being so slippery.
