Thousands march in South Africa in defence of 'sovereignty' after US pressure Thousands of South Africans marched Saturday to demand respect for their nation's sovereignty after months of pressure from US President Donald Trump on issues from trade to race relations. Trump has clashed repeatedly with South Africa's government, hitting the country with high tariffs, berating President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Oval Office over discredited claims of a "white genocide", and boycotting a G20 summit in Johannesburg last year. Marking Human Rights Day in South Africa - the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, when apartheid police opened fire on a crowd of black protesters - Ramaphosa's party called for marches "in defence of our sovereignty and democratic gains". "The principle of national sovereignty is under attack from foreign and domestic forces," the party, the African National Congress (ANC), said in the manifesto convening the ...

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has instructed his legal team to initiate full court proceedings against businesswoman Tracy Ohiri following her renewed accusations that he owes her N280 million for campaign materials supplied during his time as a party chairman. In a statement issued on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaz, Umahi described Ohiri's persistent claims, including earlier allegations of sexual harassment, as unfounded and damaging. The controversy gained traction after Ohiri posted viral videos on social media accusing the minister of indebtedness and misconduct. Ohiri was previously arrested by security agencies and prosecuted over the matter. Following intervention by her lawyer, Barrister Marshall Abubakar, she deleted the posts, withdrew the allegations, and issued a public apology that also went viral.  Russian drone strike kills two in Zaporizhzhia ahead of US-Ukraine talks    A Russian drone strike on Zaporizhzhia on Saturday morning killed a man and a woman and injured two children, Ukrainian officials said, just as a U.S.-Ukraine diplomatic engagement was expected in Miami. The drone hit a private home in the city, raising concerns about civilian safety amid ongoing tensions with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dispatched an official delegation to the United States to resume stalled U.S.-brokered talks aimed at ending Russia’s invasion. The mission seeks to restart trilateral negotiations with Moscow, which have produced little progress, and to ensure continued U.S. support for arms transfers from NATO allies. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the pause in talks is temporary, while Western officials note that Russian forces still control nearly 20% of Ukrainian territory. Meanwhile, the Iran conflict and temporary U.S. waivers on Russian oil have ...

NOWRUZ CELEBRATIONS DISRUPTED AS IRAN WAR AND INTERNET BLACKOUT LEAVE FAMILIES CUT OFF. (PHOTO).

Image
Nowruz celebrations disrupted as Iran war and internet blackout leave families cut off Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is traditionally a time of renewal and family gatherings. This year, however, many Iranians will be unable to celebrate with loved ones. Ongoing conflict in the country has limited travel, and a continuing internet blackout has left families unable to connect. The blackout has been in effect for three weeks, and only a few workarounds remain operational, as authorities tighten restrictions on satellite connections and virtual private networks. For Iran’s population of more than 90 million, the shutdown prevents them from receiving messages, sharing greetings, or staying informed about current events. “The lack of accurate information and the absence of collective, immediate communication have made us feel trapped and isolated,” said Saeed Souzangar, a tech entrepreneur and digital rights activist based in Tehran. Iran has previously restricted internet access, inclu...

Ryan Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’ premieres in NYC, draws A-listers to LA press screening amid buzz The premiere of Project Hail Mary in New York was a spectacle in itself, though the logistics raised eyebrows.  With temperatures hovering at a frigid 30 degrees, the red carpet was set up outside on Josie Robertson Plaza, far from the theater entrance at Lincoln Center.  This arrangement forced stars to trek across the plaza, delaying the screening by nearly an hour. Despite the hiccups, the film running 156 minutes was well received by the audience, showing strong engagement throughout the night. Meanwhile, Los Angeles hosted a quieter press screening at IMAX’s Playa Vista headquarters.  Though less glamorous, it drew notable industry figures, including showrunner Bill Lawrence, who mingled with trade reporters and even offered directions to hidden snack spots in the office complex.  Former SNL star Taran Killam and THR’s Scott Feinberg were also spotted, unde...
