Sheriff Frankie McClendon had this to say about the attack, "In 38 years, I've never been involved or seen anything to this extent as far as injuries caused by any wild animal."
Alicia Maxey has undergone four surgeries and remains in critical condition after being discovered badly wounded on March 29th.
According to Alicia's sister-in-law Kat Kelley, Alicia reported hearing a deep growl right before being attacked. Kelley says Alicia described what attacked her as dog-like, but did not say with certainty that it was a dog.
Authorities in the area have gathered pieces of Alicia's clothing left at the scene. They say they will test them for animal DNA to determine if Alicia was attacked by a bear, mountain lion or a dog.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses. In the GoFundMe, the family states that the homeowners discovered Alicia unconscious with the dog still present however authorities believe it was more than a dog attack. It goes on to say that Alicia was the family’s breadwinner as her husband is on kidney dialysis waiting for a transplant. Alicia is the mother to four children and is now facing a long road to recovery.
Despite the family stating it was a dog attack, the Pittsburgh County Sheriff's Office is working with Oklahoma Wildlife Services to identify her attacker for sure due to the severity of her wounds.
Our thoughts are with Alicia and her family as she recovers.
