Pope Leo XIV welcomes US-Iran ceasefire, urges dialogue and prayers for peace Pope Leo XIV expressed cautious optimism Wednesday over a temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, calling the agreement “a sign of deep hope” during remarks to a crowd in St. Peter’s Square. His comments follow criticism of President Trump’s earlier threat to “destroy a whole civilization” if Iran did not meet U.S. demands by Tuesday evening, which the pope described as morally unacceptable and a serious concern for the Iranian people. The ceasefire, announced just before Trump’s deadline, pauses military operations for two weeks to allow both countries to negotiate a 10-point peace proposal. While Trump hailed the agreement as a significant step toward resolution, some officials and lawmakers have expressed skepticism, noting reports of Iranian strikes in the Gulf following the announcement. In his address, Leo called for both sides to return to dialogue and urged the faithful to pray that diplom...
