Abia APC in Turmoil as Benjamin Kalu’s Endorsement Sparks Fierce Backlash from Rival Aspirant

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has been thrown into a fresh crisis as a major stakeholders’ meeting endorsed the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, as the party’s preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement, which drew participants from the three senatorial zones and all 17 local government areas of the state, has triggered strong opposition from another prominent aspirant, Mr. Mascot Uzor-Kalu.

At the meeting held in Umuahia, some party leaders urged Benjamin Kalu to formally declare his intention to contest, describing him as a strong candidate capable of delivering victory for the APC in 2027.

The South East representative at the Federal Capital Civil Service, Mr. Martins Azubuike, explained that the gathering was aimed at consolidating the gains of the last party congress and aggregating the views of Abians through representatives from the wards and local governments.

Responding to the endorsement, Benjamin Kalu expressed gratitude to the stakeholders for finding him worthy but said he would make his final decision known in the coming weeks.

“My response is going to be made available in a few weeks. I want to thank you for finding me worthy of this position. So in the coming weeks, prepare yourself. I am aware that when that response comes, you will be happy,” he said.

He added that the party was gearing up to win the 2027 governorship election and would play effective opposition politics in the state in the meantime.

However, the endorsement was swiftly rejected by Mascot Uzor-Kalu, who described the meeting as a premeditated plan to impose a preferred candidate on the party without the input of other aspirants.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mascot Kalu warned that any such consensus arrangement would be strongly resisted.

“Let it be stated clearly and without ambiguity: any premeditated consensus arrangement orchestrated by the APC State Working Committee and stakeholders, without the participation of all aspirants contesting for the same position, is illegitimate, unacceptable, and null and void ab initio. Such an imposition will be met with stiff and unequivocal resistance,” he stated.
