Anambra speaker Udeze hails bishop Kukah's appointment as COOU chancellor, calls it a statement of institutional seriousness

The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze, has lauded Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for appointing Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).
In a statement issued today, Udeze described the appointment as one that “speaks for itself” and reaffirms Soludo’s prioritization of education in the state.
“Bishop Kukah is a scholar of international standing, a moral voice this nation turns to in its most difficult moments, and a builder of institutions that outlast administrations. Governor Soludo has set a standard with this appointment and COOU will rise to meet it,” Udeze said.
The Speaker, an alumnus of COOU with a Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree from the institution, said his commendation is both institutional and personal.
“COOU shaped me. It is not an abstraction to me. It is a place of real memories, sacrifice, and transformation. That is why I refuse to be passive about its future. Whatever the House of Assembly can do to strengthen this institution, we will do,” he stated.
Udeze also praised the appointment of Prof. Peter Onwualu as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, calling it a “complementary masterstroke” that shows the administration is rebuilding COOU’s leadership “from the top down.”
“Chancellor and Governing Council. Governor Soludo has addressed both in one decisive move. Prof. Onwualu brings a distinguished record of academic leadership and institutional governance. Taken together, these appointments signal that this administration is investing not just in the infrastructure of education, but in its soul,” he added.
Highlighting the Assembly’s role in COOU’s history, Udeze recalled that the legislature passed the 2014 bill renaming the university after Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and the law establishing COOU Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.
He noted that the 8th Assembly deepened that commitment, passing the 2025 budget with N22 billion for institutional development and N11 billion for smart schools. Education received a 101.4% year-on-year increase — the largest sectoral jump — in the N607 billion budget that recorded 80% implementation.
“The appointment of Bishop Kukah gives the university a new ceiling. But appointments alone do not build universities. Legislation, appropriations, and oversight do. The House will continue to provide every enabling framework COOU needs through policy, funding, and institutional attention,” Udeze said.
He extended felicitations to Bishop Kukah and Prof. Onwualu, expressing the Assembly’s full confidence in their capacity to lead COOU’s governance with distinction and integrity.
