Suspected bandits launched a daytime attack on Awon village in Southern Kaduna on Monday, killing two residents and abducting seven others, further intensifying concerns over insecurity in the area.
According to reports, about 30 armed men arrived on at least 15 motorcycles around 9:00 a.m., splitting into groups and opening fire indiscriminately on villagers.
A local source said the attackers stormed Awon village and began shooting shortly after arrival.
Two residents, identified as Joseph Sule and Awilo Madugu, were killed during the assault.
Seven others were kidnapped, including Gift Victor, Hannatu Yusuf, Salina Sam, Silvia Sam, Dogarah Maisamari, Hassana Bulus, and Joy Samaila.
The situation remains tense, with some villagers still unaccounted for.
The source noted that three girls who fled into nearby bushes have yet to return, while at least one injured victim is currently in critical condition at a hospital.
Residents say the attack is part of a troubling pattern.
Just days earlier, on April 12, suspected bandits attempted to invade the same village during a church service but were repelled by the military.
Security forces reportedly responded quickly during Monday’s incident as well, preventing further casualties and abductions.
Southern Kaduna has continued to experience frequent attacks by armed groups, leading to deaths, kidnappings, and widespread displacement of residents.
