First baby born through surrogacy celebrates her 40th birthday: 'How lucky am I'
Jill Brand, the first baby born through gestational surrogacy, marked her 40th birthday on April 17, 2026. Her birth in 1986 was historic, representing the first time a woman gave birth to a child with whom she had no genetic connection.
Jill, now a mother of three, reflected on the milestone in a joint interview with her mother, Sandy, and shared her gratitude for her parents’ perseverance and love, noting that her late father, Dr. Elliot Rudnitzky, played a pivotal role in pioneering the practice.
The journey to Jill’s birth was marked by heartbreak and determination. After Sandy lost her ability to carry children and endured the devastating loss of a baby following complications, Elliot proposed the idea of surrogacy.
Initially dismissed by many doctors, the couple eventually found support from Dr. Wulf Utian, who believed the concept had potential.
His willingness to explore the idea led to Jill’s birth, which Sandy described as one of the most extraordinary days of her life.
Though Jill’s early years attracted some publicity, her mother chose to keep family life private, focusing on raising her children.
Now, decades later, Jill and Sandy have decided to share their story more openly, honoring Elliot’s legacy and highlighting the creativity, resilience, and love that made gestational surrogacy possible.
Jill’s reflections underscore both the scientific breakthrough her birth represented and the deeply personal journey of a family determined to find a way forward.
