The Special Anti‑Touting Squad Agency (SASA) in Anambra State has ramped up its campaign against illegal revenue collectors, moving aggressively into the streets to clamp down on extortion and protect traders.
In a recent enforcement operation carried out in Onitsha and surrounding neighbourhoods, SASA operatives arrested six individuals accused of harassing traders and commercial operators for money. Those apprehended were identified as Monday Chukwuka, Sunday Chinweze, Uche Nweke, Ekene Onyedimma, Anakwe Uchenna, and Ugochukwu Ukadike. Officials said the suspects were identified and tracked through intelligence work and surveillance activities.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly collected levies without any legal authorization, demanding payments from unsuspecting traders and drivers for personal gain. Authorities warned that such activities undermine the state’s legitimate revenue systems and place an unfair burden on small‑scale business owners already struggling with operating costs.
The six suspects have been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Onitsha North, where they were remanded in a correctional facility. The court granted bail under strict conditions, including a N200,000 bond, a N300,000 fine, and a Level 17 civil servant as surety. The case has been adjourned to July 1, 2026, for further hearing.
Speaking through its media aide, SASA reaffirmed its zero‑tolerance policy toward illegal levies and economic sabotage. The agency warned that anyone found engaging in unauthorized collections or extortion would face decisive action. Residents and traders were also urged to promptly report any cases of harassment, unlawful charges, or suspicious revenue agents to the appropriate authorities.
