ABIA LABOUR PARTY HOLDS STATE CONGRESS, AS GOVERNOR OTTI ASSURES OF CONTINUOUS SUPPORT TO THE NEW LEADERSHIP.
The Abia State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has held its State Congress with Hon. Peter Azubuike emerging as the State Chairman and Chuks Akanmadu, as State Secretary.
Other Labour Party State Executive officials elected at the consensus Congress that was adjudged credible and peaceful were Emenike Iroegbu, Publicity Secretary, Joy Ngozi -Treasurer, Ben Oti - Organizing Secretary among others.
Speaking during the congress held at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia, on Saturday, April 25, the Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, described the congress as peaceful and a signal of a new era of unity in the party.
Gov. Otti added that the New State party officials would be taking off in smooth manner and in the New Secretariat.
"This is the beginning of a new era. Gone are the days when somebody will be pulling from one direction and another will be pulling from another direction, now we will all pull together.
"One thing you can take for granted is that, like we have always done, we will support our Party and the New Leadership of the Party.
"Already, you have a Secretariat that has just been described as befitting and if there is anything that you need, please feel free to let us know.
"We want a smooth take-off of the new administration," Gov. Otti stated.
The State Chief Executive, who congratulated the new executive members on their emergence, also praised the Congress Organising Committee for the job well done, and further commended the former Chairman of the LP in Abia, Mr Emmanuel Oti for holding the Party firm during the period of National Leadership crisis.
Gov. Otti equally commended the National and State Leadership of the Party, members of the electoral committee and stakeholders for contributing to the success of the exercise.
"I want to congratulate the New Executive members and all Labour Party members for conducting our affairs in a very, very smooth and sound manner.
"This is how our things have always been; very smooth, very sound and I'm very proud of you," Gov. Otti declared.
Governor Otti urged the New Party Leadership in the State to ensure a seamless take-off of the its administration and advised the former Leadership to continue supporting the New administration, stressing that their experience would be vital in ensuring stability and strengthening of the Party.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the State Congress Committee and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Hon. Acho Obioma, said that the congress followed successful ward and local government congresses held on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
Hon. Obioma, who said that the processes were peaceful and transparent, added that aspirants emerged through consensus across positions and noted that the exercise reflects the unity and internal democracy within the Labour Party.
Contributing, the State Congress Coordinator, Dr Chibuzo Okereke, said that the process complied with the relevant laws, including the Constitution of Nigeria, Electoral Act and party guidelines and noted that the congress was part of a broader democratic process leading to the party’s National convention
Speaking in an interview with newsmen, the newly elected Chairman of the Labour Party, in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike said that his mission is to lead the party to win every part of the State in 2027.
The Party Chairman and grassroots politician from Obingwa LGA, said that consensus remained a recognised method of conducting party congresses and assured that the party would intensify membership drive and mobilise support to retain power in the State in 2027.
"We'll make sure we go down to every nook and cranny to ensure that the party captures every aspect of the State," Hon. Azubuike stated.
The State Congress was attended by creme de la creme of the Labour Party in Abia State.
