Residents of Lilu town in Ihiala Local government area of Anambra state have appealed to federal and state governments to beef up security in the area to end the reign of unknown gunmen.
The community made the call following claim that
three bomb explosions occured during a mass burial to at Eziorsu and Umuezeala areas of the town.
According to an account of the incident shared by Okwulora Lilu on a popular community Facebook page, 'Lilu GA Adịrịrimna TV', no casualty was recorded during the attacks said to be carried out by unknown gunmen.
The statement read: "Despite grave danger, courageous Lilu men today took the risk to ensure their beloved ones were buried at Eziorsu and Umuezeala wards, as the community conducted another round of mass burial.
"The burial process was shaken by three separate explosions, believed to be the work of unknown gunmen still testing Lilu’s fragile peace.
"Miraculously, no life was lost and no injury sustained during the explosions. Mourners and Agunechemba Security Unit members escaped unharmed.
Despite the successful burial, the community made appeal to federal and state governments to make provisions for extra security in the area.
"Ndi Lilu are using this medium to make a direct, urgent appeal: We appeal to the Federal Government and Anambra State Government under Gov. Charles Soludo (Oluatugwu) to deploy more security forces and establish a permanent military/security base at Umuezeala/Eziorsu axis.
The statement listed the reason governments need to beef up security in the town as follows:
"End the Bombings. Three explosions in one day during burials shows unknown gunmen are still active in that axis.
" Protect Eziorsu/Umuezeala. These wards today started installing solar street lights to beat 6-plus years of darkness. They cannot develop under bomb threats.
"Secure St. Charles Axis: All mass burials are converging at St. Charles Catholic Church. The church road, the cemetery, and surrounding homes need 24/7 protection.
"Full Recovery of Lilu: 80 percent achieved. A military base will deliver 100 percent and allow rebuilding of Charity Club, Orie Ebetete Market, hospitals, and schools, residents.
And their message was unmistakably clear:
" We can bury under bombs, but we cannot rebuild under bombs. We can light our streets with solar, but we cannot power industries without full security.
" We can reunite siblings at funerals, but we want to reunite them at New Yam Festival in September."
