In a statement issued on Sunday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the management clarified that it was not properly informed about the invitation extended to Obi by a student group.
According to the statement, the university only became aware of the status and profile of the invited guest a day before the scheduled programme.
“The university authorities were not duly informed about the invitation or the status and calibre of the invited guest until Friday, just a day before the scheduled programme,” Olarewaju said.
He explained that visits by high-profile individuals require sufficient notice to allow for proper planning and coordination, including security arrangements involving agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Olarewaju noted that these measures are necessary to ensure the safety of the guest, members of the university community and the public.
The statement added that due to the short notice, the institution could not complete the required arrangements and therefore did not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event.
He stressed that the decision was based solely on safety considerations, orderliness and adherence to established procedures, and not a sign of disrespect to Obi, whom the university said it holds in high regard.
The Vice Chancellor, Adebayo Simeon Bamire, was also quoted as reaffirming the institution’s willingness to host distinguished personalities, provided due process is followed.
The university urged students, staff and the general public to adhere to established protocols when organising events within the campus.
