George Clooney was celebrated in New York City on April 27 as the recipient of the 51st Chaplin Award, recognizing his significant contributions to cinema.
Speaking with PEOPLE at the gala, the 64‑year‑old actor admitted that being the center of attention felt “awkward” and “a little bit embarrassing,” joking that his way of preparing for such events was simply to “drink.”
Clooney attended with his wife Amal, noting that while she doesn’t give him red‑carpet pointers, he often defers to her for “smart answers.”
The annual fundraiser for Film at Lincoln Center honored Clooney with tributes from friends and collaborators including Stephen Colbert, Julianna Margulies, John Turturro, and Sam Rockwell.
Margulies, who starred alongside Clooney in ER, recalled his reputation as a prankster, saying she avoided becoming a target by never “rocking the boat.”
Turturro, who worked with Clooney on O Brother, Where Art Thou?, also spoke about his playful nature, highlighting the camaraderie he brings to his projects.
Clooney, who turns 65 on May 6, most recently appeared in the 2025 film Jay Kelly and has confirmed plans for Ocean’s 14, reuniting with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts.
Production is expected to begin later this year, continuing the legacy of the beloved heist franchise. The Chaplin Award adds another milestone to Clooney’s career, honoring both his artistry and enduring influence in Hollywood.
