Meryl Streep recently shared that her iconic role as Miranda Priestly almost didn’t happen.
During a reunion interview with Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, the Oscar winner explained that she initially turned down the offer to star in The Devil Wears Prada.
Her refusal wasn’t about disinterest, but rather a strategic move to test her leverage. Streep revealed she doubled her asking price, and the studio quickly agreed, reshaping the deal entirely.
Reflecting on the decision, Streep said it took her decades in Hollywood to realize she could negotiate so boldly.
At 56, she recognized both the film’s potential and her own value, noting she was confident the project would succeed but prepared to walk away if the studio didn’t meet her terms.
She admitted she was even ready to retire at the time, underscoring how pivotal the moment was in her career.
Released in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada became a global hit, earning over $326 million and cementing Streep’s portrayal of Miranda Priestly as one of cinema’s most enduring characters.
Two decades later, the cast has reunited for The Devil Wears Prada 2, which premiered in New York and will be released widely on May 1, continuing the legacy of the beloved story.
