The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of three students and one staff member.
The accident occurred when a vehicle conveying 24 students and one staff member was involved in a crash in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. The group was returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Onen Ebri Onen, the university confirmed the deaths of four persons.
The deceased were identified as:
- Comrade Solomon Uya, Director of Sports, Students’ Union Government (SUG)
- Comrade Lucky Erim, Department of Chemistry, President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association and President of Presidents
- Comrade Favour Darlington, Department of Educational Management
- Mr Anthony Arikpo, a staff member and driver of the vehicle
The university stated that the surviving students and any other injured persons are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals. Management assured that adequate medical care is being provided for all the victims.
Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Stella Maris-Okey, visited the injured students in the hospitals. Prof. Bassey remained with the victims into the early hours of the morning to ensure they received necessary medical attention.
In her condolence message, Prof. Bassey described the incident as a devastating loss to the entire university community and extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased.
She reassured the injured students and their families of the university’s unwavering support, stating that their full recovery and welfare remain a top priority.
The university appealed for calm among its community and urged parents and guardians to remain assured that every possible effort is being made to ensure the best care for those receiving treatment.
