AKPABIO URGES SOUTH EAST TO SHUN ARMED STRUGGLE, EMBRACE PEACE FOR DEVELOPMENT. (PHOTO).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to the people of the South East to sustain peace and prevent their youth from engaging in armed struggle against the Federal Government. Akpabio made the plea on Saturday during the funeral of Sir Albert Ikechukwu Nnamani, former Administrative Secretary of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (OMPADEC), held in Ikem, Enugu State. In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, Akpabio emphasised that development can only thrive in a peaceful atmosphere and urged Ndigbo to properly mentor the younger generation. “For Ndigbo, I want to plead with you to continue to maintain the peace and watch the youth of today. They don’t understand politics. They don’t understand development. You can only have development in an area of peace,” Akpabio said.  Four UNICROSS Students, Staff Killed in Road Accident The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of three students and one staff member. The accident occurred when a vehicle conveying 24 students and one staff member was involved in a crash in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. The group was returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. In a statement issued on Saturday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Onen Ebri Onen, the university confirmed the deaths of four persons. They only want harm for Mali," recounts the man taken prisoner during the assault on the Bamako airbase on April 25, according to the corps' channel. "My commander abandoned me and fled," the prisoner said in a video published by the unit, Sputnik reported. Noting that he is a member of JNIM*, the prisoner admitted to having joined the group under the influence of terrorists. He confessed to killing civilians and taking their belongings on his commander's orders. The prisoner also denied the terrorists' claims that, in the event of captivity by the Malian Armed Forces or Russian forces, torture and death are inevitable. He maintains that he is living "in good conditions" and being treated "humanely."

 CAF confirms dates for AFCON 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be played between Jun 19 and July 17 the African Federation (CAF) announced on Saturday without revealing which of Uganda, Kenya or Tanzania would host the opener or the final. The dates were approved by the FIFA Council in Vancouver, Canada, after fears the countries would fail to be ready were quelled with CAF president Patrice Motsepe who fought off a delay to 2028. "We have worked hard to ensure that the AFCON is held in East Africa, and our commitment remains unwavering. I am confident that we will organise a very successful AFCON in these three countries," Motsepe said. This edition of the AFCON, the first spread over three countries, will mark the return of the competition to East Africa for the first time since the 1976 edition in Ethiopia.
