At least two people have lost their lives and more than 50 houses were destroyed following a powerful rainstorm that hit Dokan Mai-Jama’a in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The village head, Alhaji Hamisu Tukur, confirmed the incident, noting that the storm caused significant damage and displaced many residents.
Speaking on Tuesday, Tukur explained that over 50 homes were badly affected, with several completely flattened by the strong winds.
Residents reported that the heavy rainfall, accompanied by violent winds, began around 6:41 p.m. on Monday and lasted for about 40 minutes.
A visit to the community revealed widespread devastation, with many families left homeless and trying to recover belongings from the wreckage of their houses.
While some buildings collapsed entirely, others had their roofs torn off, exposing occupants to harsh weather conditions.
Many affected residents were seen searching for temporary shelter.
Victims have called on the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) to provide urgent assistance.
In a related incident, the storm also affected Sabon Gyero community in Millennium City, within the same local government area, damaging several houses and destroying more than 10 perimeter fences.
Eyewitnesses said the rainfall also disrupted traffic after a major road was blocked, forcing motorists to take alternative routes.
Meanwhile, NEMA has sent a team to assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary response.
