UN says 53 Congolese refugees have died in Burundi More than 50 refugees fleeing fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have died in neighbouring Burundi, the United Nations Refugee Agency told Reuters late on Friday. Of a total 53 deaths recorded, 25 people died due to a cholera outbreak, the agency said, while six others died from anemia and other complications related to malnutrition, it said. The U.N. said it was working with the health ministry and other partners to investigate the cause of the other deaths. More than 100,000 Congolese have sought refuge in Burundi since fighting near the border intensified in early December and rebels seized the town of Uvira, the UNHCR said.  FRSC Confirms Four Dead In Kaduna–Abuja Highway Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command, has confirmed that four people lost their lives in a fatal crash on the Kaduna–Abuja highway on Sunday evening.

Sector Commander, Corps Commander Iliyasu Tijjani, who disclosed this in a statement, said the accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at Kakau, near Gonin Gora, on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis.

According to him, the crash involved a gas-laden tanker and a Toyota Hilux vehicle, both heading toward Kaduna. Preliminary investigations revealed that the Hilux, which was reportedly speeding, rammed into the tanker from behind.

“The crash was caused by excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking,” Tijjani said.

He explained that five persons — four males and one female — were inside the Hilux at the time of the accident.

“Sadly, the four male occupants were confirmed dead at St. Gerard Catholic Hospital, while the lone female passenger is receiving treatment at the FRSC Clinic, Tollgate, Kaduna,” he added.

The Sector Commander noted that the impact of the collision caused severe damage to the vehicle and temporarily disrupted traffic flow on the busy highway before emergency responders cleared the scene.

Tijjani cautioned motorists against speeding and reckless overtaking, stressing that most crashes along the Kaduna–Abuja highway are linked to impatience and disregard for traffic rules.

“Drivers must always observe speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and avoid dangerous manoeuvres,” he warned. “The Corps will continue to enforce traffic regulations to safeguard lives on our roads.”

He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated the FRSC’s commitment, alongside other emergency agencies, to ensuring safer road use across Kaduna State.
